Duties
NATURE OF WORK
This is retail customer service work assisting customers with requests, purchases, and inquiries in the
Stationery Room. Work includes assisting customers; processing cash, credit card, flag purchases,
and Stationery account transactions; monitoring stock levels in stores; and assisting with deliveries to
Senate offices. Work is bound by Secretary of the Senate policies and procedures; the U.S. Senate
Handbook; and the Senate Ethics Manual, but requires independent judgment in setting priorities and
handling assignments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assist customers with inquiries, purchases, including flags purchased by constituents using U.S.
Treasury’s Pay.gov payment system, and returns; ensure compliance with various purchase
restrictions established by the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration; provide general
information to customers regarding available options; and resolve customers’ issues.
Verify customers are Senate employees; process cash, credit, and Senate Account transactions
accurately; and provide customers with the Senate’s receipt and return policy.
Monitor stock levels daily; notify warehouse personnel of need for additional merchandise; maintain
store cleanliness; periodically scan items in store to ensure prices are correct; create and replace shelf
tags; place new shelf tags on new items that do not have barcodes; notify manager of discontinued
items when shelf is empty; organize merchandise displays; and ensure display areas are kept clean.
Assist with stock replenishment in all store areas; receive and process items using a retail
management computer system; and provide backup support for warehouse personnel.
Maintain current knowledge of the Stationery office’s Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and Continuity
of Operations (COOP) plan; participate in periodic exercises and drills.
Assist in other areas of the Stationery Room as needed or directed by management.
As part of the Secretary’s customer service initiative (known as R.A.T.E.), provide all customers with
the highest level of customer service.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENTWork is performed in a retail store environment with exposure to everyday risks and discomforts, andrequires normal safety precautions when operating equipment and performing the work. Work isessentially sedentary with occasional walking, standing, bending, carrying items 25-50 pounds suchas books, papers, small parcels, etc. Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required forperformance of duties. Work also requires physical presence in the office, except as otherwiserequired by the Office of the Secretary.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSWork requires a high school diploma or GED, with one to three years of retail or customer serviceexperience and the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:Ability to provide prompt and courteous customer service.Ability to deal with others using tact and diplomacy.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to accurately process cash, credit cards, Stationery account transactions, returns, and maintaincash/check accountability.Ability to operate cash registers and inventory tracking equipment using a retail management system.Knowledge of merchandise and its location in the store.Ability to read, comprehend, and follow rules, regulations, procedures, functions, and instructions.Ability to use computer and relevant computer software programs.Knowledge of Senate Rules regarding the purchase of Senate merchandise.Basic knowledge of the Senate as an institution preferred, with a desire and willingness to learn moreabout the legislative process, as well as the history and operation of the SenateLICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTSNone.
