THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a WELDER, Position Description Number D2745000 and is part of the ID G4 MATES, National Guard. THIS POSITION IS PERMANENT.

Duties

Performs all types of welding shop functions, manufactures, repairs, tests, inspects, and reworks metal devices and part used with and on aircraft, and related aircraft maintenance equipment. Welds metals and alloys by Heli-arc (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding process. Completes welds on light gauge metals such as chrome nickel, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and low and medium carbon steels. Sets temperature and inert gas flow, selects correct tungsten electrode, filler rod and cup size. Welds metals and alloys by metallic art-welding process. Completes welds on ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Selects welding temperature and suitable electrode for type and thickness of metal. Welds metals by oxyacetylene welding process. Welds metals such as steel, cast iron, aluminum, magnesium copper, and their alloys by fusion and adhesion processes. Selects proper torch tip, filler rod and flux; regulates gas pressure. Uses cutting torch for cutting metals to size. Welds metals by resistance welding process, completes welds on light gages of carbon and alloy steels, aluminum and magnesium alloys, chrome nickel and titanium. Sets up welder and regulates air pressure, tip force, dwell time, temperature, and various other controls. Welds butt, lay, tee and corner joints in flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead working positions, depending on welding process and requirement. Lays out work, reads and interprets blueprints, technical publications, and otherdirectives. Draws working sketches, makes templates, and selects materials. Shapes and forms metals using various metal working machines and hand tools, determines need for machining parts. Sets up jobs by tack welding and use of various jigs, clamps, and fixtures. Performs fabrication of local manufactured items required for support. Work includes bending, cutting, forming, casting, cleaning, molding, welding, and assembling. Heat-treats metal parts to specification requirements; controls heat-treating furnaces and quenching equipment to alter physical and chemical properties of metal objects by methods of controlled heating and cooling such as hardening, tempering, annealing, case hardening, and normalizing. Examines and treats condition of metal parts and components; determines metal identity and characteristics by subjecting metal to spark, acid, fire, magnetic, alkaline, heat, quench, and fracture tests. Inspects metallic surfaces visually for cracks, corrosion, and blistering, using magnification process. Tests specimens for predetermined requirements of tensile, bend, shear, and impact strength, using materials testing machines. Maintains welding, testing and electroplating equipment; replaces parts, makes adjustments, and performs operator maintenance. Must be able to recognize and determine types of metals of aircraft and other equipment requiring repair of rework. Provides on-the-job training on assigned systems and related support equipment and tasks to include classroom instruction as necessary. Processes and accounts for due-in supply assets. Ensures that material and equipment are properly stored, protected, and maintained and that funds are not obligated for material or parts without proper justification. Prepares for and participates in various types of readiness evaluations. May be required to serve on maintenance assistance teams throughout supported region. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

  • Must be able to obtain/maintain Secret Security Clearance.

Experience in using accepted trade methods and a variety of manual welding processes to weld all types of commonly used metals in various shapes, sizes and thicknesses. Experience using a wider range of metal welding processes to make more difficult welds meeting close tolerance, strength and other requirements. These welds may be in hard-to-reach places. Experience which allows the welder to devise special jigs and fixtures to hold the parts to be welded. Experience which demonstrates knowledge of several related trade procedures. Experience which enables the lay out and planning of work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications and work orders. Must have a Welding Certification either Military or Civilian.
