This position is located at Shiprock Service Unit, Northern Navajo Medical Center (NNMC), Medical Surgical Unit, Shiprock, NM.
Position serves as support staff, responsible for the prioritizing of tasks as assigned under the licensed professional nursing staff utilizing universal precautions and ensuring a safe, clean and orderly environment conductive to the delivery of quality nursing care.
Incumbent reports to the Supervisory Nurse, Medical Surgical Unit.
Duties
Provide basic nursing care to patients with a variety of conditions, illnesses, and/or injuries. Responsible for obtaining and recording patient information as assigned per unit policy. Shares in the responsibility of maintenance of clinical records and nursing care plans. Maintains a courteous and professional manner. Assists in admitting and discharging patients.Shares in the responsibility for reporting observations by observing the patient's condition and reactions, and keeping the nurse in charge informed of condition changes.
Assists patient in Activities of Daily Living (ADL).Assists health providers in examination of patients by explaining procedures, positioning, draping and assembling instruments and supplies.
Performs general maintenance duties including, arranging and restocking supply cabinets; cleaning and sorting supplies, instruments and equipment. .
Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Apply and Use Preston Standard 0621 Nurse Assistant . Use the Preston Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions for this series in conjunction with the Individual Occupational Requirements described below.
Candidate must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level to qualify for the GS-05 level, OR Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with courses appropriate to the specialization of the position.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-03:
Completed 26 weeks of general experience - general nursing assistant experience performing simple personal nursing care duties and related support duties.
Education: 1 year above high school with courses directly related to the position.
GS-04:
Completed 26 weeks of general experience and 26 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-03 grade level to qualify - performing a variety of nonprofessional nursing care and diagnostic support duties in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility.
Education: 2 years above high school with course directly related to the position.
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills,and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have
been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet
the minimum qualification requirements.
Education: 2 years above high school with course(s) related to the occupation, if required.
GS-05: Applicant must have qualifying experience equivalent to the next lower grade.
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as:
Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
