The James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital is recruiting to fill Health Technician- Transporter vacancies. The primary responsibility of the Health Technician- Transporter is the safe and timely transport of patients in wheelchairs, on a stretcher, or ambulatory and items supporting patient care to and from various locations within the Medical Center. Items to be transported include but are not limited to: medical equipment, medical records, x-ray films, and laboratory specimens.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following duties:
Safe and timely transport of patients in wheelchairs, on a stretcher, or ambulatory and items supporting patient care to and from various locations within the Medical Center.
Determines the appropriate level of assistance needed to transfer the patient (independent transfer, two-person assist, etc.) and the appropriate means (e.g. wheelchair, stretcher, or bed) required to transport the patient.
Facilitates a timely transport of the patient by getting the patient from his/her room.
Assists the health care professional in the transport of critically ill patients under direct supervision.
Escorts discharged patients from the ward to their mode of transportation at a designated hospital entrance, transfers patient belongings and home equipment and assist the patient into the vehicle.
Recognizes and reports readily apparent (dramatic) changes in patient's condition which requires the attention of a health care profession (Registered Nurse or Physician), initiates CPR as needed and makes the Code Blue or MRT notification when indicated.
Ensures that special medical equipment (oxygen cannulas, masks, and oxygen tanks or indwelling/ex-dwelling catheters, etc.) is correctly positioned for transport and operating properly.
Responsible for the proper use, storage, cleaning and disposal of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME), RME is any medical equipment designed by the manufacturer to be reused for multiple patients.
Responsible for knowing what reusable instruments, equipment, medical devices or supplies are in use in their clinical area.
Uses principles of safe environmental practices and reports defective equipment, environmental hazards such as debris and/or deficiencies to the appropriate person or supervisor.
Practices principles of asepsis, including but not limited to; hand washing between assignments.
Adheres to safety and infection control policies.
Uses Standard Precautions when indicate.
Transports supply items, laboratory specimens, and other items.
Communicates with all staff, co-workers, and families and must utilize good interpersonal skills.
Support customer service standards, promote a positive image of the hospital, and be sensitive and guarded with confidential information.
Knowledge and skill sufficient to observe/report and document the patient's physical and emotional reaction to treatment/transport.
Assists in transportation with final salutes.
Work Schedule: Variable, including weekends and off tour shifts

Physical Requirements: This work is physically demanding, requiring periods of walking, sitting, and regular bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing, pulling, reaching, carrying supplies, and similar activities. The use of mechanical lifts when necessary and good body mechanics is expected. Work is strenuous at 1/3 of the time. Incumbent will be caring for patients who may be uncooperative and combative due to physical or emotional illness. Incumbent must have the ability to function under pressure/stress typically associated with daily duties. Incumbent may be required to work, holidays, weekends, or rotating tours intermittently.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-04 grade level: Must possess six (6) months General experience AND Six (6) months specialized experience OR Two (2) years above high school with courses related to the occupation, if required. (equivalent to the GS-03 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
General experience includes:
Transferring patients, proper use, storage, cleaning and disposal of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME).
Uses principles of safe environmental practices and reports defective equipment, and environmental hazards such as debris and/or deficiencies to the appropriate person or supervisor.
AND,
Specialized experience includes:
Practices principles of asepsis, including but not limited to; hand washing between assignments
Adheres to safety and infection control policies
Uses Standard Precautions when indicated
OR
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 2 years above high school.
OR
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of general experience and education beyond 2 years above high school. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
