About the Position: You will perform work in maintaining, repairing and overhauling various mechanical and electrical features of a hydroelectric power plant, dam and switchyard including annual inspection and major repair to power generating units. Duties

Provide support work involved in the tear down (disassembly and reassembly) of the main generator and all of its components. Perform rigging and signaling (balancing and damaged parts of generator) as needed when moving and placing equipment in and around the plant and loading and unloading of trucks. Provide support in the repair, cleaning, installation and testing of electrical equipment of various voltage ranges from 24 volts DC to 125 volts DC and 120 volts AC to 161,000 volts AC throughout the power house, dam, and switchyard. Clean, prime, paint, and apply protective coatings to equipment located in and around the powerhouse, dam, and switchyard. Perform various types of welding in the repair and fabrication of equipment for the power house, dam, and switchyard. Fabricate and build various items in and around the power plant to include: tool boards, boxes, safety and equipment boards and storage bins. Repair concrete bases for motors, pumps, and piping supports.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A pre-employment and bi-annual physicals are required for this position.
  • Physical is required - heavy lifting and carrying of items weighing more than 40 lbs.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

WORKING CONDITIONS- Performs work inside and outside. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. Frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines. Subject to electrical shock, changing climatic conditions, water hazards and loud noises. Occasionally climb and work from ladders and scaffoldings exposing to the possibility of serious injury from slipping and falling. Dirt, grease, fumes, dust and dampness are frequently encountered. Works around heavy machinery, with and around power shop equipment. Various protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes, and glasses are used.
