Employee serves as a senior Technical Editor, responsible for developing, designing, editing and overseeing the preparation and publishing of scientific publications.

Duties

Edit technical documents related to scientific research, incorporating the techniques, terminology, style requirements and modes of writing used in scientific research.
Review technical documents submitted by subject matter experts for accuracy and adherence to style.
Resolve editorial discrepancies so that completed documents provide a uniform, consolidated portrayal of an organization’s programs, projects, and objectives.
Review written documents to ensure conformance with style guide, correcting errors and inconsistencies.
Write and edit technical material for a general audience, such as reports, pamphlets, or fact sheets, based on technical documents of research results authored by scientists.
Provide technical advice to resolve matters of style and technique for scientific publication organization, incorporating expertise in publishing concepts, practice, policies, and standards, and current technology in publishing techniques.
Present information to intended audiences in a clear and meaningful format.
Resolve problems and negotiate differences arising in terms of technical content, final formatting, and data presentation.
Provide feedback on trends and patterns in customer support requirements.
Requirements

Qualifications

This position requires skill in editing technical publications. If selected for an interview, you may be required to complete an editing test.
GS-11 Level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least to the GS-09 grade level; OR a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M. that included a total of 15 semester hours in an appropriate scientific, technical, or social science field(s), and at least one course above the introductory level in the field of information technology; OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.).
Specialized experience for the GS-11: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least to the GS-09 grade level. Specialized experience is experience that required substantial subject matter or technical knowledge of the field. This experience must have demonstrated the ability to acquire and present technical information through independent reading, interviews with subject-matter specialists, observation of tests and experiments, interpretation of blueprints or diagrams, or other appropriate methods.
To qualify at this grade level, your experience must reflect 52 weeks of ALL of the following and be documented in your resume:
Collaborating with authors and subject matter experts to edit and revise a variety of technical and scientific documents such as technical reports or guides, manuscripts, information papers, or fact sheets; or review technical or scientific material for conformance with style and editing material for consistency of fact and logical presentation.
Reviewing technical or scientific material for conformance with style and editing material for consistency of fact and logical presentation.
Providing authors with best options to visually display research results using charts, graphs, or digital tools.
GS-12 Level: You must have one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Graduate education alone is not qualifying at this grade level. To qualify at this grade level, your experience must include 52 weeks of ALL of the following and be documented in your resume:
Collaborating with authors and subject matter experts to edit and rewrite a variety of technical and scientific documents such as technical reports or guides, manuscripts information papers, or fact sheets.
Reviewing technical or scientific material for conformance with style and editing material for consistency of fact and logical presentation.
Applying quality assurance criteria, procedures, and policies for technical and scientific documents and managing multiple publishing projects during various stages of preparation.
Managing the workflow for a research publication organization by providing expertise in publishing and printing concepts, practices, policies, and standards.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
