These positions are located within the Health Administrative Service Line at the Corporal Michael Crescenz VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. The Telephone Operator provides comprehensive telephone and telecommunications support to the VA Medical Center and associated sites by processing calls and providing information.
Duties
***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION***
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Provides information of a routine nature;
Receives and directs callers to the appropriate area;
Provides general telephone and visitor referral services;
Refers callers to appropriate facility or program area based on request or nature of the call;
Operates the VA Medical Center centralized telephone system;
Obtains accurate patient account information in order to transfer calls to appropriate area;
Answers and screens calls directing all calls to proper extensions;
Maintains records of toll and long-distance calls;
Operates internal and external paging system;
Monitors and distinguishes between all alarms throughout three campuses (fire, medical, supervisory, duress, panic, burglary, boiler plant, disaster);
Sets up, activates, and monitors computer systems and equipment such as code alarms, etc.;
Performs testing of all communication and alarm systems on a daily basis;
Monitors and interprets On-Call directories;
Utilizes features of telephone consoles, headsets, telephones and other related equipment; and
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Rotation of shifts which include: Day Shifts, Night Shifts, Weekend Shifts, Holiday Shifts

Qualifications
TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-04 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
Experience: Have at least one (1) year of general experience at the level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to GS-03 grade level in the Federal service. The experience could have been progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular competencies needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. This may be paid or non-paid experience. NOTE: Your experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. OR
Education: Have successfully completed two (2) years of education above the high school level (education may have been obtained in an accredited junior college, college, university, business, secretarial or technical school). NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR
Combination: Have an equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience which meet the total qualification requirements for this grade level. NOTE: Your experience must be documented in your resume and transcripts are required.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. The employee sits comfortably to do the work. There is some moving around to adjust equipment; carrying of light items such as papers, books.
