The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), West Los Angeles Medical Center Campuses, (Engineering Service).
Duties
Duties included but not limited to:
Prepare coating materials with any of the accepted trade devices including those designed to give special effects such as brushes, rollers, spray guns and graining devices.
Skilled in use of the trowel in spreading mortar and finishing joints and in the use of gauge line, spirit level, and plumb bob in obtaining straight courses.
Ensures that the coating finish meets/match texture, decorative, thickness and level requirements.
Perform duties of a journeyman Painter as well as some carpentry and masonry in conjunction with maintenance, repair, renovating and construction of hospital environment.
Knowledge of construction and repair techniques; the type, grade, and working characteristics of wood and wood substitute materials such as strengths and applications.
Prepares surfaces by methods such as smoothing, filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins, and mixing and apply pre-coating agents.
Performs work that involves the maintenance, repair or construction of curbs and occasionally walls.
Removes damaged portions of the wall, partitions, or other similar structures in preparation for repair of damage.
Skilled in use and operation of a variety of hand and power tools such as hammers, hand saws, drills, planes, routers, screwdrivers, power nailers and fasteners, glue guns, metal shears, screw guns, power saws, and power sanders and planes.
Ensure that the proper proportions of sand, lime, cement, and water are used to obtain desired consistency.
Must also know how to buildup, shape and level surfaces with metal and synthetic resins, plastics, and patching compounds, obtain finely smoothed surfaces with abrasive compounds, pumice, and rottenstone, even out dents and scars by burring-in processes and treat surfaces with pre-coating agents.

Physical Requirements: The painters prepare and coat surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. This requires them to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The painters frequently lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment that weigh up to I0 pounds. Occasionally, they may handle materials and equipment that weigh 40 pounds and over.
