This position will be supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, at the Southern Arizona VA Medical Center within Mental Health Service. The incumbent of the Psychology Technician (Psychometrics) will have general and specific knowledge of the methods and techniques used by psychologists in the evaluation, treatment, vocational placement and/or systematic research involving psychiatric, neurologic, medical and/or surgical patients.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Assists neuropsychologist in administering and scoring of neuropsychological procedures in accordance with clearly defined procedures. Assists psychologist in completing intellectual, emotional functioning and personality rating scales, and/or in conducting behavior modification and education to patient/family. Assists psychologists working in vocational settings in contacting potential employers for purpose of making vocational placement, providing follow-up consultation, administering, and scoring of interest, achievement and aptitude tests, securing work history and other relevant vocational information. Assists in research as in systematic collection of psychology research data, recording and collecting of data, preparing tabular or graphic presentation of data in accordance with a predetermined research plan. Supports aspects of behavior therapy/modification/rehabilitation procedures and patient/family education depending on level of experience - as approved and supervised by psychologist if work setting requires this function. Administers, scores, and evaluates a variety of psychological and neuropsychological tests and techniques (e.g., biofeedback) to patients under the direct supervision of a psychologist. Discusses tests with a psychologist to aid in determining appropriate course of treatment or disposition. Interviews patients to obtain specific data (i.e., psychosocial histories to Include family, academic, occupational, significant Interpersonal history and history of past psychological treatment or contact) for the purpose of diagnosing and/or prescribing a treatment plan. Observes and notes significant behavior and modes of response and assesses whether any of these circumstances will invalidate or significantly affect data obtained. Combines and compares test scores and interview responses with established norms and presents factual data to be interpreted by professional staff members. Assists supervisors in the recognition and resolution of problems to enhance vocational productivity. Compiles written case history, patient complaints, test results, and other clinically relevant information for use in the subsequent assessment and diagnosis of patients by the supervising psychologist. Observes and reports patient behavior, emotional status, and motivation during testing. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. OR 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; may be adjusted to meet the needs of the service. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/20/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06 grade level. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Administering psychological assessment, working with individuals with diverse background, scoring assessments, and interviewing patients. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed one full year of graduate education. (COPY OF GRADUATE TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION). OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE AND A COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION). You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: CommunicationsInterpersonal EffectivenessOrganizational Stewardship Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Preferred Experience: At least 2 yrs experience as a psychometrist. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, minimally requiring sitting, standing, walking, bending, rapid eye-hand coordination, articulate speech, above average intellectual-cognitive functions, carrying light objects, and strong attention to detail. The position demands periods of intense concentration and the ability to maintain self-control in difficult situations. The physical and emotional stress involved in working with physically and psychologically impaired patients makes this position much more demanding than most sedentary positions.
