About the Position: Air Conditioning Equipment Operator within the Directorate of Public Works, performing full range of work involved in operating the refrigeration and air-conditioning plant and equipment to Laboratory specifications and requirements, performs preventive maintenance on various types and sizes of equipment and systems located at the Hanover Research site.

Duties

Operate integrated industrial and laboratory reach-in and walk-in refrigerators, cold room and related equipment; makes adjustments as necessary to maintain set temperatures, corrects abnormal conditions, and to prevents malfunctions. Position designated as mission essential; in the event of unplanned hazardous material releases, the incumbent must continue to perform the mission essential duties. Participate in hazardous material response training and readiness exercises. Regulate equipment and systems to meet extreme temperatures and close tolerances required for a variety of special purpose research and engineering projects. Safely start, stop and regulate the air conditioning compressors or absorbers, the cooling tower fans, and other related support equipment in accordance with procedures with central or local switches as required for load conditions. Perform preventive maintenance on various types and sizes of equipment and systems; check temperatures and pressures, oil and refrigerant levels in main plant. Ensure cold rooms temperatures are within set limits, proper refrigerant line pressure and proper operation of the automatic defrost system. Soldering, welding, and brazing in connection with the repair of leaks and in either disconnecting/connecting refrigerant and electrical lines. Clean parts, inspect for wear and/or damage, clean or replaces filters, lubricate parts and reassemble unit installing new seals, gaskets, etc. Assist higher graded mechanics with the repairing and installation of new and existing equipment and components. Interpret environmental and safety laws for ammonia refrigeration system operation.

Requirements

  • Appointment subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Pre-employment and Annual Physical Examinations (Respirator Test).
  • Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Certification.
  • Moderate to Heavy Lifting (up to 50 lbs).
  • Rotating Shifts/Emergency/on call work schedule.
  • Temporary Duty Travel less than 10% to other Duty Locations.
  • Protective clothing and/or equipment.

Lifting equipment, such as chain hoists, is available for heavier objects. Some standing, stooping, bending, and work on ladders (occasionally over operating equipment) is required. Working Conditions Work is performed inside and occasionally outside, frequently in cramped and awkward positions; shop area is usually adequately heated and ventilated; floors are of concrete; Extreme temperatures when working in cold rooms; subject to possible injuries such as cuts, bruises, burns, and electrical shock; possible disorders to refrigerant gases.
