The primary purpose of this position, Industrial Equipment/Metal Working Mechanic, WG-5301-10, is to perform metal work involved in the manufacture, repair, modification, and assembly of-various types of metal and alloy parts, equipment, and overhead doors and cranes systems.
Duty Title: Doors and Cranes Journeyman
Duties
Plan and lay out work from blueprints, sketches, specifications, and work orders.
Install, maintain, and repair a variety of facility systems and equipment such as, monorails, hoists, electrically operated hangar doors, electric cable doors, and overhead cranes.
Use a variety of welding processes such as oxyacetylene, electrode arc, submerged arc, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, metal spray arc, and spot and stud welding.
Develop patterns, cut, form, join, assemble, and install sheet metal items and systems which have combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves, angles, and planes.
Perform preventive maintenance services.

- Position requires a certificate of competence issued by the American Society of Mechanical Engineer (ASME). American National Standards Institute (ANSI). American Welding society (AWS) for specific welding process.

- Selectee may be required to serve a probationary or trial period.
- The work requires the employee to drive a government motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required for the position. May be required to obtain a California commercial Driver's License.
- Must obtain and maintain a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Will be required to train/guide lower graded (or other trades) civilian employees.
- Will be required to be certified for working with and/or removing hazardous material.
- Flight line Driving /Testing is required.
- May be required to participate in mobility exercises.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is Ability to Do the Work of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items in handling larger and bulkier material. Requires physical effort which include prolonged standing; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolds; working in cramped and awkward positions while installing items; and reaching, lifting, and bending while welding and using hand and powered tools. Frequently handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance and over 50 pounds with assistance.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Works both inside and outside and is subject to noise, dirt, grease, smoke and vibration from shop machines. When working outside is subject to a variety of weather conditions. Subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and burns. Is exposed to fumes, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches, ultraviolet radiation, and heated materials. Shop areas normally have adequate lighting and ventilation. Required to wear protective clothing, safety glasses, flash shield, gloves and other items as required.
