This is a Lead MST level position in Sterile Processing Service in Amarillo, Texas at the Amarillo VA Medical Center. This position works in support of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Ensures RME SOPs and SPS mandates are followed during the performance of workflow. In this position, the incumbent will provide sterilization, preparation, supply items and decontamination support for the medical center. The term "supply item" as used in this functional statement refers to reusable items for patient care including instrumentation, surgical trays and sets and various other items that are processes or assembled through the Preparation and Decontamination areas of Sterile Processing Service.
Complete training coursework and VA SPS certification as required for a Sterile Processing technician position in the VA. Maintain certification by completing approved, annual Continuing Education Units (CEU) and annual in-service hours.
The incumbent has knowledge of the processes for critical and semi-critical Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as required by this position. The incumbent will be required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of critical and semi-critical RME appropriate to this position. The incumbent will be able to demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of critical and semi-critical RME appropriate to this position.
Work Schedule: Rotating shifts: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm; 8:00am - 4:30pm; 9:00am - 5:30pm

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
Education: One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Certification: None
English Language Proficiency: MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS-07 Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)
Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Experience may include knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings, knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination, working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures, knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation, and ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures.
In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:1. Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.2. Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations.3. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.4. Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures.5. Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.
Preferred Experience:
1. Preferred 2 years of experience
2. Working knowledge of AVAHCS policies and procedures
3. Working knowledge of Reusable Medical Equipment and Infection Control practices
4. Program project development and implementation
5. VA Level One Certification for Sterile Processing Service

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07.
Physical Requirements: The position will require heavy lifting (45 pounds and over), heavy carrying (45 pounds and over), pulling hand over hand, walking (8 hours), standing (8 hours), and repeated bending.
