The Supervisory Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is an expert clinician who is clinically and academically qualified to provide effective transformational leadership to the program while achieving its mission goals and expected outcomes.
The Supervisory APRN will lead and coordinate the Pause Initiative. The Pause Initiative is a process whereby patients who will undergo surgery are screened for "frailty" using a validated frailty scoring tool. Frailty is a major risk factor for mortality, morbidity, and increased length of stay after surgery. Patients with a high frailty score will be evaluated in more detail by a committee of physicians in Surgical Service who will provide recommendations to the surgeon caring for the patient to attempt to mitigate the risk of surgery in that patient and to improve surgical
outcomes. The Supervisory APRN has oversight of implementation, development and coordination of all activities of this process and the Committee, including, but not limited to, generating clinical summaries of the medical condition of all patients to be reviewed by the committee, organizing the review of each patient by the committee, generating minutes and progress notes in the medical record to document the committee's recommendations for each patient, and to input orders into the medical record of patients reviewed by the committee, as necessary.
The Supervisory APRN will also be accountable for the leadership and professional development of the Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants assigned by the Chief of Surgical Service. Therefore, the Supervisory APRN will be responsible for tasks including, but not limited to, completion of performance appraisals, management and scheduling of time and leave, and administration of disciplinary actions, if necessary. The Supervisory APRN will need to frequently coordinate with the relevant clinical Section Chiefs for the NP's and PA's under their supervision.
The Supervisory APRN would also be assigned to clinics or inpatient services at the discretion of the Chief of Surgical Service. These assignments will change periodically as demands change, and the changes will occur at the discretion of the Chief of Surgical Service.
