This Maintenance Mechanic position is located in Facilities Management at the Charles George VA Medical Center and the Western North Carolina Health Care System in Asheville, NC. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.

Duties

The incumbent performs a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. The duties are performed within at least two trades.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/15/2023. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent is required to perform the work while standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, or working with hands overhead. There is work requiring lifting and carrying of up to 45 pounds. In addition, it is sometimes necessary to work in cramped quarters, in small openings, on stepladders, in areas with dust, dirt, extreme heat or cold and in unventilated areas. Incumbent is subject to the hazards of working near energized steam lines and electrical lines as well as hazards when working with power and hand tools. The incumbent must be alert and must exert concentration in maintaining and repairing the various pieces of equipment and appliances. Incumbent must be able to determine the cause of malfunctions and take the necessary steps to correct them in order to insure proper operations. Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to stand on his/her feet for long periods of time, crawl, stoop, climb ladders, work in close quarters and in inclement weather as required to access the various utility systems. He/she may be required to lift objects up to 50 pounds and is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards, pressurized steam, , asbestos, mold, etc. The incumbent will be proficient in Confined Space Entry procedures as needed to access the medical center's utility systems. Incumbent will also utilize ladders, scissor lifts, boom lifts, and fall protection equipment as required.
