This Maintenance Mechanic position is located in Facilities Management at the Charles George VA Medical Center and the Western North Carolina Health Care System in Asheville, NC. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.

Duties

The incumbent performs a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. The duties are performed within at least two trades.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent is required to perform the work while standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, or working with hands overhead. There is work requiring lifting and carrying of up to 45 pounds. In addition, it is sometimes necessary to work in cramped quarters, in small openings, on stepladders, in areas with dust, dirt, extreme heat or cold and in unventilated areas. Incumbent is subject to the hazards of working near energized steam lines and electrical lines as well as hazards when working with power and hand tools. The incumbent must be alert and must exert concentration in maintaining and repairing the various pieces of equipment and appliances. Incumbent must be able to determine the cause of malfunctions and take the necessary steps to correct them in order to insure proper operations. Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to stand on his/her feet for long periods of time, crawl, stoop, climb ladders, work in close quarters and in inclement weather as required to access the various utility systems. He/she may be required to lift objects up to 50 pounds and is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards, pressurized steam, , asbestos, mold, etc. The incumbent will be proficient in Confined Space Entry procedures as needed to access the medical center's utility systems. Incumbent will also utilize ladders, scissor lifts, boom lifts, and fall protection equipment as required.
