The primary purpose of this position is serve as Working Leader of the Rapid Prototype Fabrication Shop overseeing groups Model Makers and Contract Machinist in the application of fabricating items involved in Conventional Munitions test hardware and equipment in R&D facilities, modification of R&D facilities, and test operations.
Duties
Assists Branch Chief in establishing priorities and providing technical direction to the team, consisting of the following four areas of expertise (1) Model Making (2) Sheetmetal Fabrication (3) Welding (4) Carpentry.
Operations Oversight. Assists the supervisor in performing work direction responsibilities.
Makes independent judgements and decisions in determining how to fabricate an item to meet the precise specifications established by the scientist or engineers responsible for testing the item.
Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.
Serves independently or as a crew member to plan and fabricate items involved in conventional weapons testing articles and facilities.

- A physical examination requirements may be required.
- The work requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching. Frequently requires handling, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and occasionally will be required to lift and move heavier items with assistance.
- Work performed in areas that are noisy and dirty and there is constant danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips and abrasive particles;
- skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds, and danger to fingers, hands, and other body parts from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotation pieces, and moving parts of machines.
- Additional safe workplace precautions include avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, and following local and manufacturer safety guidance.
- The actual work performed in this position has been reviewed and determined that it does not meet any of the exemption criteria defined in 5 CFR 551. This position has been designated as nonexempt.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C; for the WG-4700, General Maintenance and Operations Work Family. for additional information refer to this FWS qualifications link: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/federal-wage-system-qualifications/ . Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for all trade and labor occupations, you must meet any minimum experience or training requirements per OPM qualifications standards and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
