The Claims Assistant - Office Automation (OA) serves the Beneficiary Travel Section of the Business Office, Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Nashville, TN.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Performs a variety of responsible administrative functions related to Beneficiary Travel. Serves as an expert source of information and guidance to other services requiring knowledge of Beneficiary Travel. Prepares vouchers for beneficiaries claiming reimbursement of travel expenses in accordance with rates, current mileage, and additional allowances for ferry, bridges, roads and tunnel toll costs. Processes claims for payment via computer (DHCP-Beneficiary Travel Menu) Types and mails denial letter to veterans who are not eligible to receive beneficiary travel. Monitors accounts, estimates obligations and actual expenditures, including funds used by our outpatient satellite. Determines accurate eligibility of veterans to eliminate inappropriate denial of travels entitlement. Maintains designated funds control accounts, applying sound government accounting techniques for authorization or beneficiary travel reimbursement, including all request for specialized transportation. Reviews billing submitted by all vendors to ensure that cost for services is no more than charged the public, and that service meet the specifications of VA contractual agreements. Prepares reports of obligations in each separate fund account and projects future needs as required. Contacts nursing homes as well as DVA Medical Centers around the United States relative to travel arrangements necessary to conduct inter-facility transfers of DVA patients. Prepares various correspondence related to Beneficiary Travel. Recognizes and corrects potential work hazards. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm Recruitment Incentives: Yes, authorized. Relocation Incentives: not authorized. TYPING PROFICIENCY: This position requires the skills of a qualified typist. In addition to meeting the experience and/or education requirements, you must be able to type at least 40 words per minute. and SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience equipped with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the Claims Assistant position. This experience must have been equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience includes receiving, developing and processing authorized or unauthorized requests for services and/or payment; screening or determining eligibility, urgency and availability of services; performing cost analysis and referrals; initiating, preparing and mailing correspondence to patients or vendors authorizing or denying full or partial services or payment; compiling, receiving, reviewing and maintaining statistical and financial data; preparing mandatory or special reports on a daily, monthly, quarterly or annual basis; using skills to interpret and explain policies to staff, patients, vendors, etc.; ability to operate pertinent office equipment and automated systems; and maintains an understanding of the appropriate programs in order to enter patient data. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of successfully completed education above high school in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience to meet the total requirements for the position. Example: Six (6) months of specialized experience and two (2) years above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. Physical Requirements: The work involves standing, some walking and carrying of light items, such as books, papers, and charts. Some physical stress may be realized from concentration at computer and workload.
