This position is located within the Foreign Disease Weed Science Research Unit for the Agricultural Research Service in Frederick, MD.
In this position, you will perform a variety of semi-skilled and manual labor tasks associated with custodial, maintenance support, and janitorial services, which includes a full range of cleaning activities in assigned areas of the buildings involving the use of heavy industrial-type powered equipment as scrubbers, buffers, and vacuum cleaners.
Duties
Changes brushes, rollers, buffers, and other attachments.
Trims and fertilizes ornamentals plants and shrubs around laboratory grounds.
Operates large, complex riding mowers and similar types of specialized mowing equipment, edgers, gas blowers, snow blowers and other yard maintenance tools.
Coordinates floor stripping and waxing and window cleaning as needed.
Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes floors.
Applies herbicides to control undesired vegetation and pesticides to destroy unwanted insects in accordance with approved methods and label directions.
Assists higher-graded employees with remodeling efforts of labs and offices, relocating equipment during remodeling, helps with installation of new equipment and other maintenance activities.
Dusts, waxes and polishes furniture and metal fixture.
Empties wastebaskets, recycling bins; washes windows, doors, walls, blinds, etc.; cleans lunchroom and appliances; cleans restrooms and floors.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

- Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 11/17/2023. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. Physical Effort
Moderately heavy physical effort is required when using ladders and scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, etc.; operating powered equipment; and carrying materials. Work requires continual standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Using normal safety practices, only minor risk of injury is expected.
Working Conditions
Work is performed not only inside, but also in greenhouses and outside in all kinds of weather. The inside work may occur in areas that are dusty, drafty, and noisy. The equipment, tools, and tasks involved at this level frequently require extreme care and use of safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, or respirators to avoid serious injuries.
