Duties
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.
As a Pest Control Worker, you will,
Construct and replace barrier fences in natural areas to manage non-native mammalian and invertebrate pests.
Assist in the control of invasive plants, plant diseases and pest invertebrates in natural areas.
Implement chemical and manual techniques and determines optimum control schedule to effectively manage target species.
Safely handle, mix, apply, maintain, and store chemicals and pesticides, tools, machinery and equipment in compliance with OSHA, EPA, NPS and all applicable federal state and local laws, regulations, and policies.
Carry out vehicle and helicopter transport of personnel, materials and supplies to project sites.
Navigate and camps in a remote backcountry setting up to 10 nights a month.
Uses chainsaws to buck invasive plant species or hazardous trees from project areas
LAUTENBERG AMENDMENT: This position authorizes the incumbent to have access to firearms and ammunition. Under certain provisions of the Federal Gun Act, persons subject to a qualifying protection order (18 U.S.C., Section 922(g)(8)) or convicted of a qualifying misdemeanor crime of domestic violence (18 U.S.C., Section 922(g)(9)) are prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. Any person who has been convicted of a qualifying misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not qualified. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by candidates is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1001).
Haleakala National Park is located on the Island of Maui, approximately 30 miles from Kahului, the island's largest commercial center (population approximately 25,000). Park headquarters is located at 7,000 feet elevation where weather is often cool, wet and windy. Summer temperatures vary from 50 - 70 degrees and in winter range from the low 30's to mid 60's. Complete shopping and medical facilities are available in Pukalani/Makawao area, about 19 miles from park headquarters. Elementary schools are located in Kula, Makawao, Pukalani, and Haiku. High schools are located in Pukalani, Kahului and Wailuku. Public transportation is not available to the park; personal transportation is essential. Rental prices for an average 1-bedroom cottage range from $900-1200/month, $1600-1800/month for a 2-bedroom cottage, and $2400/month for a 3-bedroom house. Purchase prices for a home begin at about $750,000 and range considerably upward.
