About the Position: The position is for a Security Guard with Arlington National Cemetery, located in Arlington, VA. Since May of 1864, Arlington National Cemetery has served as the nation's premier military cemetery and shrine honoring those men and women who served in the Armed Forces.
Duties
Conduct foot or vehicle patrol of perimeters, roadways, parking and other high traffic areas as well as interior of shops, storage, administrative and other structures.
Conduct vehicle searches/inspections in accordance with standing operating procedures.
Secure installation from all unauthorized entry on own initiative or upon notification of alarm or emergency.
Question suspicious persons and warns or detains violators of laws, regulations, policies, rules or posted warnings.
Perform security guard duties in accordance with appropriate regulations to detect and prevent theft, damage, accident, trespass, sabotage and espionage and to enforce the security and safety regulations of the installation.
Inspect containers, personal property, documents on private, commercial, and governmental vehicles.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Note: In Accordance With (IAW) Army Regulation (AR) 190-56, requirements of Individual Reliability Program apply.
- Note: Incumbent is subject to possible civil actions due to improper exercises of authority or injudicious use of force in the detention of individuals.
- Note: May require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).
- Note: May be required to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment, and may be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to sign Department of the Army (DA) Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- Must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
- May include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
- Must successfully complete security guard training.
- Must successfully complete Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and First Aid training.
- Will be required to pass entry level and annual re-certification of standard Army physical fitness/agility.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must wear prescribed uniform.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds or more.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.
Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment.
Physical Ability Test (PAT): All Applicants and Employees must pass PAT. PAT consists of: 19 Pushups in 2 minutes; Running 1.5 miles (2.41 km) in 17:30 minutes.
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes: Works for a Federal, State, municipal, local, or a private protective organization providing the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass or maintains order and protecting life. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade level in the federal service (GS-5 or equivalent).

Education

Conditions of Employment: Continued
- Note: Good eye/hand coordination is required to operate radios and security weapons and equipment. Must be in sufficient physical condition to conduct assist in searching vehicles and persons and restraining persons. Infrequently lifts persons involved in accidents/incidents; uses unarmed combat techniques for self-defense to subdue persons.
- Must participate in regularly scheduled training in the techniques of use of deadly force, anti-/counterterrorism, first aid, firearms, search and seizure, security operations and enforcement of installation rules, regulations, and policies.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- THIS POSITION IS COVERED BY THE 1996 LAUTENBERG AMENDMENT TO THE GUN CONTROL ACT OF 1968. PERSONS CONVICTED OF A MISDEMEANOR CRIME OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THIS POSITION.
