This position is located in the Resident Services Directorate of the Recreation Division at the Armed Forces Retirement Home - Washington, D.C. The primary purpose of the position is to implement social and entertainment recreational activities/programs for the enjoyment of the residents of the home.
Duties
As a Recreation Specialist, you will:
- Ensure that facilities are clean and presentable; schedule and follow up on routine maintenance.
- Ensure that the Theatre, Community Center, and other Recreation areas are set up for performances, concerts, town hall meetings etc. to include chairs, podium, microphones, audio/electronic/computer needs and to ensure all equipment is clean and in working condition.
- Coordinate and/or assist with implementing Recreation Programs for all levels of geriatric care at the AFRH as assigned by the Supervisory Recreation Specialist, or communicated by the Lead Recreation Specialist.
- Complete Health Checks as assigned when needed.
- Drive automobiles, pick-up trucks, and a 15-passenger van to transport residents on trips, materials/supplies throughout the grounds and on public roads, for long and short periods of time as needed
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized experience for a Recreation Specialist GS-7:
One year (52 weeks) of experience at or above the GS-5 or equivalent that has demonstrated experience applying the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs. Planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels. Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management. Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations.
OR
A Bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement. Superior academic achievement is based on 1) class standing: upper third of graduating class; 2) grade-point average (G.P.A.): 3.0 out of 4.0 overall or 3.5 out of 4.0 in major; or 3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society.
OR
One full year of graduate level education.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. This is calculated by determining an applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level AND the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. ADD these two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. NOTE: Education must have contained a major study in general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education.
SPECIAL NOTE: Long-term care experience and/or interacting with geriatric patients is highly desired.
