Duties
Plans, constructs, and repairs a variety of supply, shipping, and storage containers and similar items.
Selects the proper type and grade of wood/wood substitute from a few grades of soft pine, fir, plywood, and Masonite.
Selects containers, protective devices, cushioning materials, methods, and techniques needed for packing a variety of tools, parts, equipment, and other items.
Custom packs various items that cannot be made to fit into containers of standard size.
Applies highly detailed knowledge of cleaning, drying, and preservation methods to material.
Operates a variety of power tools and material handling equipment.

- Must be able to obtain and maintain licenses and/or certifications required by the installation, federal, state, and local laws.
Qualifications
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:
Ability to do the work of a Wood Worker without more than normal supervision (Screen-out Element): Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as receives general guidance on assignments like constructing boxes, crates, etc.; measures and saws materials to lengths that are needed; and distinguishes between different sizes and kinds of lumber, such as soft pine, plywood, etc.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Effort
The wood worker uses power and manual tools while performing repetitive, tiring work for long periods of time. Frequent standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and arm movement is required. Sometimes works in cramped or awkward positions. The work requires continuous lifting, carrying, and using tools and materials that weigh up to 60 pounds. Sometimes heavier weights are lifted and moved with the assistance of others or lifting devices such as floor hoists or Materials Handling Equipment (MHE).
Working Conditions
Work is normally performed in a shop or other enclosed areas which may be drafty, damp, or overheated. Sometimes employee works outside in fair weather, and occasionally in bad weather. Frequently exposed to sawdust, as well as other nose and lung irritations. Frequent exposure to loud noises from power saws, hammers, etc. Subject to possible cuts from flying wooden particles, nails, fasteners, etc. Hay be required to wear protective eyeglasses, ear devices, or gloves. Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area where assigned, as directed by the supervisor. Types of protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following: eye, respiratory, foot protection, and protective clothing (gloves, apron, coveralls, etc.). Other types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials. Employee will be required to wear approved hearing protective devices and an audiometric test will be conducted, as necessary, when working near or around noise hazardous areas, machinery, or equipment.
