The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development. The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is an Student Trainee (Administrative/Office Management). The Student Trainee (Administrative/Office Management) will function within Community Outpatient Services at the Mansfield VA Outpatient Clinic.
Duties
This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. Duties included but are not limited to:
Prepares documents, presentations and data reviews with Microsoft office and other software applications.
Analyzes and addresses outpatient clinic satisfaction and patient experience data.
Develops program information and resource materials for Veterans and staff.
Participates in acquisition, development, and/or scheduling of the program resource materials.
Performs all computer tasks necessary to complete letters, memoranda, reports etc., for the clinic/Service.
Assists clinic's program clerks with special projects or work overflow with a variety of clerical and administrative tasks.
Fields customers questions via telephone and email.
Coordinates and assists Veterans and clinical staff with travel.
Files and processes administrative paperwork.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm - Interns may work full-time or part-time schedules, but the student's work responsibilities should not interfere with the student's academic schedule. To be discussed during interview. THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION. The selectee will be required to report on site unless granted exception by the supervisor.

Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled.
You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below:
GS-3:
Specialized Experience: Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Examples of specialized experience include: administrative assistance and program analysis, serving as a coordinator, troubleshooter, and liaison; supporting travel arrangements and other administrative paperwork processing, outreach, data sourcing, creating program and resource information; stocking supplies; planning, and/or purchasing of program resource materials. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study. OR,
Combined Education & Experience: Possess a combination of qualifying specialized experience and education as described above to qualify at the GS-3 level. Transcripts must be submitted. For example, the position to be filled is a Program Support Assistant (Student Trainee), GS-3, determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the 6 months' experience required for GS-3; then deter-mine the applicant's education as a percentage of the l year of education that meets the requirements for GS-3. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-3.
GS-4:
Specialized Experience: Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Examples of specialized experience include: administrative assistance and program analysis, serving as a coordinator, troubleshooter, and liaison; supporting travel arrangements and other administrative paperwork processing, outreach, data sourcing, creating program and resource information; stocking supplies; planning, and/or purchasing of program resource materials. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree. OR,
Combined Education & Experience: Possess a combination of qualifying specialized experience and education as described above to qualify at the GS-4 level. Transcripts must be submitted. For example, the position to be filled is a Program Support Assistant (Student Trainee), GS-4, and a candidate possesses 8 months of qualifying experience and 20 semester hours of college. The applicant meets 67 percent of the required experience and 33 percent of the required education. The applicant meets 100 percent of the total requirements and is qualified for the position.
GS-5:
Specialized Experience: Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: acting in a front-line staff capacity and identify issues that occur at the point of service, escalating identified complaints through the appropriate chain, assisting with complaint resolution, demonstrate diplomacy, good judgment, compassion, flexibility when interacting with patients and staff, maintaining a basic understanding of numerous government laws, directives, and policies. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. OR,
Combined Education & Experience: Possess a combination of qualifying specialized experience and education as described above to qualify at the GS-5 level. Transcripts must be submitted. For example, the position to be filled is a Program Support Assistant (Student Trainee), GS-5, and a candidate possesses 9 months of specialized experience and has completed one academic year of college. The candidate meets 75 percent of the required experience and 25 percent of the required education. He/she meets 100 percent of the requirement for 1 year of specialized experience and is qualified for the position.
