This position is located in Cardiology Service, Medicine Care Line at Lebanon VA Medical Center. This position provides support by operating medical diagnostic equipment such as: Exercise tolerance test system (Treadmill), MUSE Cardiology Storage Systems, Ambulatory Monitory System, and Hotter/Event Scanner.

Duties

The Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) within VA Lebanon Medical Center evaluates test results to determine appropriate machine adjustments and use alternative techniques and procedures when established procedures do not accomplish acceptable results. This includes adapting equipment and accessories to yield the best results during the examination. They edit and select an appropriate sample portion of the tracing for further interpretation by the physician. This position includes coverage for the EKG Lab as well as the Stress/Echo Lab. Typical duties include, but not limited to: Perform studies and record results of patient testing for physician review with minimal supervision and guidance. Setup, operate and maintain cardiovascular equipment to include EKG machine, Holter monitors and other monitoring devices that are available for Cardiology procedures. Perform EKG Tests and stress testing if trained to do so. Independently set up inpatient appointments, when necessary. Show capability of recognizing indications for further studies beyond established and standardized procedures and discuss with the providers as appropriate. Give preliminary interpretations of the above-mentioned studies subject to final approval of supervising physician. Obtain familiarity with the computer system and scanner used to generate laboratory reports, use the computer independently, and recognize and report malfunctions. Follow processes, new test forms, etc. as new procedures are instituted. Be familiar with the protocol established by the approving committees such as Medical Records Committee for the approval of forms for the patient's permanent medical record. Follow and maintain a protocol and procedure manual regarding the function of the Cardiology Laboratory and make revisions and additions when necessary. Prepare patient education materials pertinent to cardiovascular disease and related surgical procedures. Perform necessary patient teaching. Be responsible for ordering and maintaining supplies as needed for the EKG Lab. Responsible for cleaning and maintaining equipment per VHA policy and manufactures guidelines. Assist with in-service sessions regarding EKG Lab procedures to house staff, medical students, nursing students, hospital nursing personnel, and other groups as requested. Train others in the performance of the above techniques and procedures. In coordination with the lead technician, receive sales representatives as necessary for the consideration of purchase of new equipment, supplies, and accessories. Be responsible for record keeping of all procedures performed in the EKG Lab. Be responsible for the minor troubleshooting on all equipment used in the lab. When equipment needs repair, will contact appropriate Biomedical Engineering staff. Provide other incidental services deemed appropriate by supervisor or lead technologist. Maintain accountability and usage of Cardio Holter Monitors for leasing contract. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation at grades GS-6 or GS-7. Licensure or Certification: License or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills and abilities. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient and spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-7 - At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Knowledge of typical patient reactions and signs of distress including the ability to recognize, report and treat potentially lethal arrhythmias. 2. Knowledge of common equipment settings and standardized procedures plus knowledge of common errors and corrective measures. 3. Ability to modify procedures/positions to obtain the correct results with patients with complicating conditions such as amputations, Parkinson's disease, structural defects, and scar tissue. 4. Ability to act as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians. 5. Ability to conduct in-service training on the EKG equipment and related instrumentation. Preferred Experience/Certifications: No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications. Physical Requirements: The work requires an individual with dexterity of all extremities. Individual will be sitting for a majority of the working hours, but will also include some walking, bending, lifting and carrying of items. The work may require lifting of equipment or patients.
