The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) for the Hemodialysis Unit functions as a supervisor and assumes accountability for the daily operation of the Hemodialysis Unit in conjunction with and in the absence of the Nurse Manager. The Assistant Nurse Manager works under the direct supervision of the Dialysis Nurse Manager.

Duties

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) for the Hemodialysis Unit functions as a supervisor and assumes accountability for the daily operation of the Hemodialysis Unit in conjunction with and in the absence of the Nurse Manager. The Assistant Nurse Manager works under the direct supervision of the Dialysis Nurse Manager. The effective ANM candidate will demonstrate a high level of clinical expertise, leadership, and creative approaches to management of employees providing care for patients with end-stage renal disease in the outpatient area and the complex care for patients in the inpatient area. In addition, he/she will apply skills necessary to identify, coordinate, and/or identify discipline-specific education, as well as training in leadership, professional staff development and emerging needs to all levels of staff. The ANM provides first line supervision and oversight for assigned staff in collaboration with the Nurse Manager. The ANM assists in the design, implementation and evaluation of unit-based nursing programs and goals. These are congruent with the service mission, philosophy, policies and procedures and the Standards of Nursing Care and Practice. The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) for the Hemodialysis Unit will perform the following duties and responsibilities: Assists the Nurse Manager in managing patient care operation at the unit level. He or she has broad knowledge and skills who acts a clinical leader in the daily functioning of the dialysis unit for both outpatient and inpatient areas. Cognizant of the water treatment system including equipment and processes under the guidelines of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards as directed. Acts as a role model for collaborative leadership and communicates effectively. Facilitates communication and collaboration among and between the dialysis unit and other departments/units regarding issues of patient care. Develops and provides education for staff to meet specific patient care needs. The ANM monitors performance of the staff and report's findings to the nurse manager or takes corrective action for improvement as appropriate. Assists the nurse manager in promoting professional development and motivation for employees to work at optimal efficiency. Assist nurse manager in compiling and submitting of required reports in a timely manner including: performance improvement reports, certified time and other workload and patient care data requested. Assures compliance with standards and regulations related to clinical practice through audits, data collection, interpretation, and reporting of findings with appropriate recommendations. Monitors key performance indicators, including quality, patient safety, and patient family satisfaction. Assists nurse manager in planning and conducting scheduled unit regular meetings, open communications and verbalization of options when identifying and resolving problems in the unit. Assists nurse manager in promoting and supporting staff to pursue leadership, professional, and educational activities. Plans for staff to attend committee/council meetings and educational opportunities. Assures that customers are treated in a professional manner with tact, courtesy, and respect. Assists nurse manager counseling staff members as indicated by performance or attitude; documents according to prescribed procedures; and maintains an objective relationship with the staff. Assists nurse manager in planning and conducting regularly scheduled unit staff meetings; encourages open communication and verbalization of options when identifying and resolving problems in the unit. The Assistant Nurse Manager distributes time and effort between hand-on direct care (60%) and management/administrative functions (40%). Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: 2-5 years of Dialysis experience for both inpatient and outpatient settings Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary with sitting at a desk working on a computer, however the employee must also be able to walk long distances (to outlying buildings, stand for periods during specific functions, bend, and carry/transport items up like stacks of papers, books, or office supplies to outlying buildings. The ability to climb at least one flight of stairs is required and must qualify for clearance to operate a government vehicle and can sit in vehicle for long period of times during trips to outlying clinics.
