This Motor Vehicle Operator position is located in the Warehouse Section of Logistics Management Service at the Veterans Administration Palo Alto Health Care System in Palo Alto, CA. The incumbent is required to drive safely exercising care and caution in the operation of vehicle and complying with all Federal government and local ordinances and restrictions.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to:
Delivers items to end users including medical supplies, equipment, forms, and office supplies.
Uses material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
Loads supplies and equipment using proper care for delivery to using services.
Unloads supplies and equipment at the proper delivery point and obtains the proper signatures, certifying receipt using automated tracking system and assuring all documents are returned to the warehouse.
Assists in the issuing of stock orders requested by services and in the pick-up of property turned in by various Services.
Assists in the receipt of shipments from freight lines and other delivery services which requires verification that the correct number of pieces has been received.
Assures each item received conforms to the specifications contained in the purchase order, requisition, or other authorized document.
Ensures vehicles are not overloaded and cargo is protected from weather elements and secured to prevent falling off vehicle or shifting while being transported.
Assists in preparing items and equipment for shipment to vendors and patients using the customized online shipping system.
Collects hazardous waste from various locations throughout the medical center.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Drivers at this grade level exert light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. May be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods of time. The physical effort exercised by the employee requires incumbent to be in excellent physical condition and able to handle, lift, or carry items weighing up to 70 pounds. Driver is required to be able to drive, handle, manipulate, and control in a proper and safe manner gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 7,000 pounds and less than 26,000 pounds, a 3/4 ton truck, or a forklift of approximately 7,000 pounds to 18,000 pounds capacity. Work is performed both inside and outside of warehouse. Incumbent may work inside areas that are hot, cold, damp, drafty, and poorly lit. May be occasionally exposed to bad weather conditions while loading and unloading vehicles. The work may be dirty, dusty, and greasy. Drives in all types of traffic and weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. Subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading the vehicle. Work may require protective clothing such as steel-toed shoes, rubber gloves, mask, and back support. Often required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time and to bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions.
