This position is located within the USDA, ARS, Midwest Area, National Animal Disease Center, Facilities Engineering Unit in Ames, IA. In this position, you will perform a full range of operations including operating hydraulic-lift equipped single-axle delivery truck, motorized forklifts of various sizes, mowing equipment, tractors, spraying equipment, chain saws, and powered hand tools.

Duties

Work in motor repair shop doing minor repairs and preventative maintenance on lawn equipment, center vehicles, off-road equipment, etc. Use safe practices and procedures for handling hazardous materials. Steer grader and operate clutches, brakes, levers and valves to accomplish required grading. Operate a variety of heavy construction equipment to include diesel road grader, case front end loader (with attachments), backhoes and trenchers.

Requirements

  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

  • Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 11/16/2023. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Engineering Equipment Operator, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Working Conditions Work is performed in all types of weather and on different types of terrain. incumbent is exposed to injury due to overturn and subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt and fumes from motor and exhaust. Subject to danger of cuts, bruises, etc. Safety requirements must be observed. Must wear protective clothing and gear for the application of pesticides. Must wear a full face respirator when working in biological control settings; facial hair restrictions may be required to comply with proper operation of personal protective equipment. Physical Effort The operation of heavy equipment requires hard physical work. Considerable strain is caused by the constant motion of this machinery. Subject to constant bending, turning, and reaching; may frequently be required to work in awkward or strained positions. Requires continuous lifting and moving of gas cylinders, active walking, standing, bending, reaching, etc.; frequently handles objects weight over 50 lb. Good eye, hand and arm coordination are required. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
