This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

The Nurse Practitioner - Pulmonary/Lung Nodule/Lung Cancer Screening (LCS) executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex client care. The Nurse Practitioner shall be involved in all clinical aspects of Pulmonology/Lung Nodule/Lung Cancer Screening care activities, working within VA and standard medical practice guidelines, policies, and directives; participate in the multidisciplinary activities of the medical center. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Analyzes patient care problems, implements preventive health measures, promotes whole health, and provides educational support for patients with complex medical conditions. Performs duties in collaboration with a Physician, in the management of Pulmonary, lung nodule and Lung Cancer patients. In addition to clinical practice, the Nurse Practitioner role includes education, research, and consultation as needed in the Pulmonary Specialty. Organizes and manages multidisciplinary team meetings and projects. Leads others in the provision of Pulmonary/Lung Cancer Screening, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and comprehensive follow-up care. Serves as a resource expert for the assessment and management of urgent or emergent care when needed. Uses advanced clinical knowledge and judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating current practice and outcomes. Assesses the patient clinically for issues relating to Pulmonary/Lung Cancer Screening. Takes leadership in ensuring that equitable and safe patient care occurs. This is evidenced by a division of responsibilities delegated to staff to ensure that all patient care needs are met in a timely and safe manner. Leads in performing and delegating indirect patient care tasks such as: returning telephone calls, responding to patient emails, reviewing clinical data, communicating results to patients, and communicating with primary care providers and other referring specialists, as appropriate. Mentors and leads in serving as a patient advocate ensuring that important abnormal or unexpected findings: (ie. Pathologies, CT, MRI, U/S or biopsies) are reviewed by the attending physicians and follow up is tracked. Evaluates and admits patients to ICU and stepdown in the absence of Fellows and residents. Performs procedures for which NP is credentialed in ICU and step down. Participates in mortality and morbidity conference. Participates in division research projects. Present cases and participates in afternoon medicine huddle. Provides resident coverage on Tuesday during resident educational half day in ICU and stepdown. Assists attendings in doing bed side procedures. Provides every other weekend coverage in ICU/Stepdown. Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:00 A.M. to 04:30 P.M. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. AND must meet Nurse Practitioner Requirements: NP Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional Nurse Practitioner in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Nurse Practitioners Education and Certification: Must possess a master's or doctoral degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in Adult, Family Practice, or Geriatric. Preferred Experience: Current Basic Life Support provider card issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN). Prescriptive privileges (Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number) with a current DEA Licensure from the United States Drug Enforcement Administration for scheduled II-V controlled substances with demonstration of meeting California State Board of Nursing requirements to prescribe controlled substances. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Physical standards as specified in VA Directive and Handbook 5019 to include lifting up to 35 pounds for 8-12 hours, intermittently; moderate carrying (15-35 pounds) for 8 to 12 hours, intermittently; lifting over 35 pounds with assistive devices in accordance with the Safe Patient Handling Policy except in emergent situations requiring prompt patient care; pulling for 8 to 12 hours, intermittently; pushing for 8-12 hours, intermittently; reaching above the shoulders for 8-12 hours, intermittently, both hands required; walking 8-12 hours, intermittently; standing 8-12 hours intermittently; kneeling 8 to 12 hours, intermittently; repeated bending for 8-12 hours, intermittently; climbing and use of both legs and arms for 8-12 hours, intermittently, both legs required; near vision at 13 to 16" Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other eye; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing aid permitted; twisting, simply grasp and fine manipulation.
