The Air Condition Equipment Mechanic position is located within the Facilities Management Service of the Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System and is responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of chiller plant systems and HVAC and refrigeration equipment for the facility.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include:
Fabricating duct work from sheet metal for modifications, installation or repair of air conditioning duct systems.
Installing and maintaining HVAC equipment and/or components (such as: ultra-low freezers, centrifuges, refrigerated incubators, tubing, valves, fittings and casting).
Utilizing technical ability to plan, prepare, design and install all types of HVAC/Refrigeration and exhaust systems.
Utilizing technical ability to interpret sketches, diagrams, blueprints, electrical schematics, formulas and programming for a building automation operation system.
Planning, designing, installing, repairing and troubleshooting HVAC/Refrigeration equipment and exhaust systems.
Maintaining current inventory of parts, hardware, refrigerant, and other products and notifying supervisor when reordering is needed.
Utilizing schematics, blueprints, sketches, technical manuals, oral and written instructions while conforming to safe efficient working practices.
Completing work assignments that are made through written and oral instructions, work orders and preventive maintenance print-out schedules.
Assembling or installing a variety of equipment (such as evaporators, condensers, receivers, expansion valves, dryers, etc.) per manufacturer's specifications.
Making mechanical repairs to such items as pumps, compressors, chillers, receivers and evaporators performing such tasks as installing and fitting connecting rods, crankshafts, rings, bearings and bushings.
Using precision tools and equipment, such as volt-ohm meters, amp meters, halide and electronic leak detectors, calibration equipment and other tools and test equipment used in the refrigeration trade.
Calibrating and setting up transmitters, thermostats, and other pneumatic electric controls.
Charging systems with proper refrigerants to obtain optimum operating temperatures.
Using charging gauges and charging cylinders to maintain HVAC equipment.
Properly reclaiming and disposing of all types of refrigerant.
Applying principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration such as the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, the use of refrigerant table.
Making bench performance checks and calibrations to assure that each control segment will be operational as installed or with a minimum of readjustment due to peculiarities of a component or system.
Using vacuum pumps, halide torches or electronic leak detectors to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
The incumbent should be able to troubleshoot, repair or replace multiple AC Equipment components with little or no supervision.
The incumbent works with a wide variety of refrigerants and operational principles, at times with little or no technical reference materials.
The AC Equipment Mechanic plan their testing procedures with little or no check during the progress of the assignments.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT): A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work frequently requires heavy physical exertion in lifting objects less than 50 lbs., and occasionally lifting objects greater than 50 lbs. Work requires much walking while carrying tools and test equipment. Work requires stooping, crouching, stretching, bending, kneeling, and balancing in tiring and uncomfortable positions and in cramped spaces. Work requires rigging of hoists, scaffolding, and chain falls, climbing ladders, walking on beams, roof, etc.
Working Conditions: While some of the work will be performed inside, the incumbent will be also required to work outside in inclement weather. The incumbent will be subjected to high ambient temperatures in the boiler plant, machinery rooms, and roofs as well as sub-freezing temperatures in walk-in freezers. Forced air breathing devices, respirators, protective clothing, face shields, goggles, gloves, etc. are sometimes required to worn when dealing with bio-hazardous waste or toxic chemicals. The incumbent will be exposed to excessive noise, rotating machinery, dust, grease, oil, etc. in machinery rooms, boiler plant, and chiller plant. The incumbent is subject to cuts, and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from acids, caustics, hot water systems, and steam systems. The incumbent is subject to electrical shocks. The incumbent is subject to toxic gas and fume exposure including R-123 and other refrigerants, formaldehyde, chlorine, etc. The incumbent will be required to work from ladders, roofs, catwalks, hoists, beams, and other elevated platforms.
