The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum Library (“Cooper Hewitt Library”), with in the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives (SLA). Duties

This position serves to support the only museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to historical and contemporary design, Cooper Hewitt Library, and its collection of more than 110,000 volumes play a pivotal role in fostering scholarship and advancing discourse that illuminates the importance of design both historically and in the present day.

Qualifications

You must meet these Basic Education Requirements: (A) Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field. Or (B) Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Or (C) Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above. In addition to Basic Requirements above, you must have the following: Selective Placement Factor: Proficiency to read at least two European languages, preferably Italian, French and/or German mandatory to perform research, writing and other duties associated with collection research, cataloging, as well as planning exhibitions. For GS-11: Specialized Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position specialized experience is defined as conducting original research on rare and distinctive collections in a research/museum library, supporting collection development/management, exhibition, and educational programs, providing public service in the form of reference assistance with rare and distinctive collections and responding to external research inquiries. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Or Education: Three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.  Or Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications.
