This position is located in the Pentagon Heating and Refrigeration Plant, Facilities Operations and Services Division, FSD, Washington Headquarters Services. The Plant is in operation on a continuous 24/7-365 basis. The PH&RP is responsible for the production and distribution of steam and chilled water, the distribution and switching of 15kV Power, and supports the Operations and Management of the Reservation's City Water, Natural Gas, Storm Sewage, and Sanitary Sewage Systems.

Duties

Incumbents typical work assignments may include the following: Operates the computer system to observe equipment readings and systems parameters. Maintains, repairs, and tests a variety of complex equipment and systems involving but not limited to chillers, pump/lift stations, invertedsiphons, single and multiple fuel power boilers, pressure vessels, and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment such as water treatment systems, and chemical dispensers. Performs preventative and scheduled maintenance on plant systems and equipment including but not limited to chilled water pumps, boiler feed pumps, fuel oil pumps, sewage pumps, air compressors, turbines, generators, steam traps, pressure regulating valves, boiler controls and instrumentation, and combustion fans. Plans and lays out installation, repair, and/or modification of a variety of complex equipment and systems. Installs, connects, and adjusts pumps, motors, valves, relays, solenoids, switches, safety devices, thermostats, rheostats, aquastats, and other similar devices. Uses stationary and industrial type power equipment such as power saws, lathes, and grinders. Troubleshoots single and multiple fuel power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment. Monitors and tests the operation of power boiler systems with equipment such as automatic controls, valves, piping, pumps, and related components. Tests fuel delivery systems, fans, moving floors, de-aerating equipment, water treatment equipment, economizers, and air compressors. Troubleshoots electrical and pneumatic controls.

Technical Practices (Theoretical, precise, artistic) PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Work involves significant walking, standing, bending, stooping, crawling, climbing of ladders, use of tools and lifting of heavy items to conduct personnel inspections of equipment, performs repairs, and correcting problems. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works around operating equipment, refrigeration plant, steam tunnels, manholes, mechanical rooms, etc. The operating areas are noisy, hot or cold, dusty and dirty and contain moving equipment and pressurized piping systems, which can be hazardous if improperly operated. The plant and the building contain hazardous chemicals that require special handling procedures and protection. Conditions require that appropriate safety gear such as hard hats, hearing protection, protective eyewear and gloves be worn.
