Duties

This position serves as a Fish Biologist for the Green River District. Provides District/Field Office specialist input to various task groups, interdisciplinary teams, and planning activities concerning the conservation of aquatic, fisheries, riparian, and wetland resources. Conducts surveys and monitors existing aquatic management habitat projects and designs, implements them, and monitors new habitat projects for the assigned area. Prepares, evaluates, and conducts biological analyses of land and water resource projects and permit applications to ensure compliance with appropriate federal law. Coordinates and consults with local Tribal, State, special interest groups and other federal agencies concerned with the proper protection and conservation of aquatic and fish habitats. Responsible for identification of impacts to fish habitat and aquatic special status species by other resource activities.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education requirements, to qualify at the GS-09 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Fish Biologist Qualifying specialized experience includes: Assisting with conducting studies and documenting changes in fish biology and habitat status; monitoring and surveying aquatic species; working with specialists and biologists to monitor on-going aquatic habitat development projects; and applying basic concepts, principles and methodologies in the field of fish biology. Or Education: To qualify based on education you must have a Master's or equivalent degree, or two (2) full years (36 semester hours) of graduate-level education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field of study. Or Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of 18 semester hours may be combined with experience. In addition to the Basic Education requirements, to qualify at the GS-11 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Fish Biologist Qualifying specialized experience includes: Conducting surveys to monitor existing aquatic management habitat projects; coordinating projects with special interest groups, Federal, State, Tribal or local agencies concerned with protection and conservation of aquatic and fish habitats; and gathering, compiling, and analyzing data to determine environmental conditions to resolve or avoid problems in habitat restoration. Or Education: To qualify based on education you must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three (3) full years (54 semester hours) of graduate-level education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field of study. Or Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of 36 semester hours may be combined with experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The physical demands of this position is awarded level 8-2 and given 20 points. The individual works in an office setting at this level, however, in order to gather samples and complete monitoring activities, the individual is required to walk or ride in vehicles over rough terrain, perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such equipment and samples. Work Environment: The work environment of the incumbent is awarded level 9-2 and given 20 points because while some work is performed in an office setting, but in many cases, there is outdoor exposure. Outdoor exposure requires some discomfort in extremes of temperature or inclement weather. The incumbent may subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards.

Education

Applicants must meet one of the following Basic Requirements for the GS-0482 Fish Biologist.

A. Possess a Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in biological science that included:
  • At least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; and
  • At least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess course work in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate.)

Possess a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
