The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for a Motor Vehicle Operator for the Veterans Transportation (VTS) Program. The Motor Vehicle Operators will function in the Travel section of Patient Care Administrative Service (PCAS).

Duties

Provide transportation for Veterans as scheduled and unscheduled. Works with a variety of services to ensure the coordination of the patchwork of transportation systems into one focused effort organized through the VTS Program. Operates gasoline powered vehicles. Operates other motor vehicles such as pick up trucks, sedans, vans, mowers, etc. when not needed to transport patients. Transports passengers and cargo in all types of vehicles, in various types of weather and road conditions. Ensures the safety of the passengers at all times. Ensuring the comfort and safety of passengers and cargo to their destination. Follows all safety rules, regulations, and traffic signs. Ensures adherences to driving carefully and avoiding rough terrain and hazardous roads to prevent discomfort or injury to the passengers and damage to the cargo and vehicles. Ensures that their undivided attention and concentration at all times when in the vehicles. Transports passengers to and from locations, while assisting the passengers in and out of the vehicles. Maintains the correct fluid levels, lubrication of the lift-gate. Maintains correct tire pressure, inspecting and reporting damage and/or defects to the vehicles. Ensures delivery of passengers and/or cargo to destination on the prescribed schedule. Maintains mileage log and inspection log of the lift-gate vehicles. Ensures the completion of trip tickets, gas receipts, tracking transportation of passengers. Communicates any incidents that may occur during or after the transportation to the manager. Recognize hazardous conditions and change routes to avoid them. Maintains comfort of the passengers and the safe conduct of the passengers and/or cargo to their destination. Making on the spot decisions involving change in routes, proper procedures in case of breakdown on the road, abnormal behavior of patients. Use VAMC gas pumps for refueling for emergencies only. Transports passengers with respect and dignity. Provides appropriate transportation assistance for each situation. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Considerable walking, stooping, bending and lifting are required. The position requires good vision and physical alertness when operating and training employees in the operating of equipment. Heavy physical effort is required in loading and unloading patient in and out of the vehicles. The incumbent will be responsible for having a certification for basic life support procedures directly related to Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). This requirement must be met on an annual basis for all drivers and maintained as a current certification. Working Conditions: The incumbent is subject to work inside and outside in areas where dirt, dust, fumes, rain, snow, heat, carious gasses and other contaminates are present. The MVO is exposed to the possibility of bruises, scrapes, cuts, falls, etc., in handling supplies, equipment within and between buildings, etc. He or she is also exposed to all types of road conditions when operating the vehicle between the clinic and the medical center.
