The Materials Handler Leader is located in the Warehouse area of the Logistics Service in a Veterans Affairs Health Care System (VA HCS) and supported catchment area. The position is located at an assigned Veterans Administration medical facility performing warehouse work. The position serves as a lead over a group of Materials Handlers within a warehouse setting.
Duties
As the Materials Handler Leader, the incumbent's duties include, but are not limited to:
Lead crew of Materials Handlers to accomplish assigned projects and daily operational functions.
Ensure workers are aware of trade techniques and practices and explains safety precautions to be followed while setting up machinery and equipment and operating related vehicles.
Report to supervisor on status and progress of work and causes of work delays.
Ensure workers are briefed on instructions received from supervisors, and getting work started, by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the crew.
Demonstrate proper work method.
Maintain a current knowledge, and answers questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders).
Check work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.
Act as a communications conduit between higher level supervisors to pass along priorities and resolves conflicting priorities among the warehouse's major segmented areas.
Assist in developing plans for storage and arrangement of stock.
Handle space and storage in a large warehouse facility in accordance with VA regulations for specific commodity or equipment group.
Undertake the full spectrum of warehouse functions for a small warehouse facility.
Drive a vehicle, truck, or van not exceeding 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), with electrical or hydraulic lift.
Work on own initiative to consolidate materials and provide maximum space utilization and protection of materials.
Maintain spreadsheets; work within responsible area to rotate stock, check for outdates, and maintain the appropriate safeguards and temperature controls.
Handle direct issue products and ensure they are processed out in a timely fashion.
Safely receive, store, and move hazardous or toxic materials and substances.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Work involves considerable walking, pushing, and pulling a variety of carts and materials handling equipment. Works offloading and loading trucks, lifting products on and off-shelves, handling boxes frequently weighing over 40 pounds. Will frequently handle equipment, furniture, and materials of an awkward and heavier nature in excess of 100 pounds. These items are typically handled using specialized equipment and/or assistance of coworkers. Greater physical effort may be required on projects involving the movement of large quantities of product over an extended period of time including but not limited to: turn-ins, large shipments and deliveries. While operating vehicles, may be required to exert a greater level of physical exertion while backing and turning trucks, operating forklifts or hand trucks on uneven and uncertain conditions.
Required to work in storage buildings, pods, trailers, vehicles and warehouses that may be hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. Will be required to work outdoors, on docks, making deliveries in all types of weather conditions during all seasons. Hazardous materials may be encounter in daily work activities. Duties subject to the possibility of trips, falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, or injury from the use of equipment. All types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required. Subject to conditions that could result in serious accidents, precautions will be taken.
