The Health Physicist, located within the VA Long Beach Health Care System is recruiting for one (1) position. responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive clinical, safety, and research program that encompasses all forms of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation; lasers; ultrasound; and magnetic resonance imaging.
Duties
Major duties for this position include but are not limited to;
Plan, direct, perform as appropriate, the execution of the radiation safety and medical physics programs of VALBHS in a technical,
scientific, and administrative scope of function with responsibility in the diagnostic, therapeutic and research modalities.
Serve as the radiation safety officer overseeing a comprehensive program in support of hundreds of individuals in the Services of Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology, and various Medical and Surgical specialties using ionizing radiation in a clinical/academic/research setting under a single Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) radioactive materials license.
Advise other health physicists, researchers, technical, and medical personnel relative to the use of radioactive materials and devices producing ionizing radiation, lasers, and magnetic resonance.
Review experimental procedures, clinical therapeutic dosimetry calculations, occupational dosimetry determinations for employees, and
evaluative measurements for patient absorbed doses.
Offer consultation and advice to other onsite and offsite senior technical experts because of the position responsibilities in the various associated disciplines.
Direct, supervise and conduct the emergency response procedure relative to radiological emergencies for the five VALBHS sites.
Evaluate the training and experience of the medical staff and other professional personnel relative to regulatory compliance requirements for the use of radioactive materials in the clinical and research setting.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm PST
Telework: Ad-hoc may be authorized for highly qualified applicants at the discretion of management.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent is required to perform considerable walking, standing, bending, and lifting, in all areas of the Medical Center. In addition, periods of extensive driving in heavy traffic are required to visit outlying clinics and CBOCs. Lifting up to 50 pounds in weight are occasionally required.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11. For a GS-13 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-12. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): This job series has the following Individual Occupational Requirement:
A. Degree: Natural Science or Engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in Health Physics, Engineering, Radiological Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, and/or Calculus.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses as shown in paragraph A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a Health Physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to Health Physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
In addition to the above, you may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
GS-12
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes...expert and comprehensive radiation safety and Laser oversight for the facility; independently provides technical support and expertise to the Radiation Safety Program and Health Care System staff, and any other facility that uses ionizing radiation in the form of radioactive materials or radiation producing machines; the ability to comprehend the impact the continued provision of research, radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology and any other service using lasers, radiation producing devices or radioactive materials; and possess the knowledge and ability to assume the role as the main point of contact in handling the interrelated, emerging, complex, and frequent conflicting nature of Federal, state, and local laws and regulations that govern the management of natural resources and the environment.
GS-13
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. There is no educational substitution for the GS-12 and/or GS-13 level.
