This position is located within the Carpentry/Paint Shop of the Facilities Management Service at the VA Medical Center in Newington, CT. The Locksmith is responsible for the installation, and maintenance of various mechanical and electronic security hardware.
Duties
The major duties include but are not limited to:
Performs master keying, pinning, re-keying, and changing mechanical locking devices;
Maintains master key records and generate master key systems for each type of locking encountered;
Services and changes combinations on safes and vaults;
Maintains security and locks for narcotic storage and medication storage;
Inspects, repairs and installs all types and functions of locks throughout the medical center;
Performs emergency lock repairs as required;
Reworks and finishes substitute parts and fabricating locking devices;
Works along side of personnel from other shops and trades;
Plans and lays out work;
Makes lock inspections and surveys;
Determines the application for install and maintain electronic locks and keying devices;
Troubleshoots and repairs electronic locks and keying devices using electronic test and repair equipment;
Maintains a database of all vehicles with key codes, bittings, and key requirements for the VA fleet;
Troubleshoots and repair or overhaul door closures of various manufacturers;
Works with VA Police and Investigators to determine methods used to gain illegal access when theft and vandalism occur and prepares reports to the VA police; and
Performs other related duties as required.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Most of the work performed requires considerable standing, stooping, walking, kneeling, etc. When repairing and repining locks, eye-to-hand concentration is required and there is possibility of eye-strain because it is close work. Considerable physical effort is expended when handling doors, moving and installing hardware etc.
Work is performed inside and outside. While working outside, incumbent is subject to all kinds of weather. Inside work may be in heated or unheated buildings. Subject to cuts, burns, bruises, etc., while working with power equipment, installing hardware, cutting keys, etc.
