Duties

The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio is seeking an exceptional, experienced attorney to join our team as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Civil Division. AUSAs assigned to the Civil Division are responsible for a wide range of both affirmative and defensive litigation on behalf of the United States. Civil AUSAs represent the interests of the United States and its agencies before federal and state courts in tort, employment, administrative, immigration, foreclosure, bankruptcy, asset forfeiture and other lawsuits. They are responsible for investigation and litigation of a wide variety of affirmative civil cases, including claims under the False Claims Act, civil rights laws, and other statutes. Civil AUSAs handle and/or oversee all tasks necessary for assigned investigations and litigation, including discovery, motion practice and trial. Civil AUSAs are also responsible for conducting outreach to the public and to federal agencies and employees on behalf of the Department of Justice and the United States Attorney's Office. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law. See www.sss.gov.
  • J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
  • Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) and have at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications The preferred candidate will have at least 3 years post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience in general civil investigations and prosecutions. Prior experience in federal civil practice and a judicial clerkship are also preferred. The preferred candidate will have significant computer and e-discovery literacy. The preferred candidate will be committed to public service, possess superior communication and courtroom skills, exhibit exceptional research and writing ability, perform thorough legal and factual analyses, demonstrate an ability to work well with a wide variety of people, exercise good judgment, and function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment while balancing a high case load. You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
