The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Sewing Machine Operator supporting the Laundry Plant at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) and Fort Wainwright hospitals, Lodging, Fort Greely, Alaska as well as locations documented via support agreements, which include Clear Air Force Station AK, Navy, Eielson AFB (North Pole, Alaska) and the Coast Guard.

Duties

Operates varying types of sewing machines. Independently performs repair work on a variety of garments and items such as fatigues, field jackets, shirts, pillows, and the like. Responsible for maintaining all training equipment that is used for both Army and Air Force personnel. This includes altering and repairing heavy materials such as wool coats, parkas, and other cold weather equipment. Occasionally replaces zippers, sews patches, name tags and pocket flaps which involve top stitching square corners and may require ripping of seams and matching replacement parts. Operates computerized Point of Sale (POS) pricing and accounting system, maintains production records and provides customer service.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C for WG-3100 Fabric And Leather Work Family QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3100 Fabric and Leather Work Family https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/federal-wage-system-qualifications/#url=WG-3100. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Ability to perform complex sewing machine operator tasks for repair work on garments, with a high degree of independence and without more than normal supervision. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair. Ability to setup and run a variety of domestic and industrial type power operated sewing machines and related special purpose machines such as buttonhole, basting and feed-off the arm machines. Skill in technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) to blind stitch, topstitch or patch materiel. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (other than blueprint reading) sew and fabricate varying textiles and fabrics. Ability to measure and layout to cut, assemble, fit, bast, stitch and install. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment, perform operator maintenance on sewing machines, operate a point of sales computer. Knowledge of apparel, linens, blankets, and other fabric articles materials. Physical Effort: Operators sit for long periods with continual" movement of hands, arms, and fingers in placing items in position and sewing. They handle lightweight items up to 5 kilograms (10 pounds) continually, and occasionally they handle items up to 14 kilograms (30 pounds). Working Conditions: The work is performed inside in well lighted and ventilated areas. Work area is often these areas are noisy because numerous machines are operating at one time. Operators are subject to possible needle punctures and minor thread cuts as well as bruises from carts and machinery. Other significant facts pertaining to this position are:. Must be able to work in an extremely noisy, hot and humid environment. Overtime and/or emergency overtime will occasionally be required, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
