Duties
Researches, develops, and presents a variety of formal and informal interpretive programs which may include conducted walks, off trail wilderness hikes and illustrative programs and which demonstrate a clear grasp of the principles of interpretation. Prepares written interpretive program outlines. Competent with PC compatible equipment and software such as PowerPoint, MS Word, scanners, printers, etc.
Coordinate the operation of a visitor facility and/or information desk, including daily work schedules, ensuring sufficient supplies, critique of visitor services, federal subsistence permits, and recommending improvements. Updates or write manuals, SOPs and handouts. Identifies and reports on facility conditions, exhibit conditions, supply inventories and purchasing needs. Communicates effectively with other divisions and park partners. Oversees daily operation of cooperating association bookstore, tracks inventory and communicates orders to partner organization to replenish stock, deposits cashes sales, and completes monthly and annual reporting requirements.
Engage and interact with local communities, partners, tribal organizations, educators, staff, volunteers, etc. to meet park objectives and community needs. Represent the park in community events and activities. May serve on interagency, interdisciplinary, and/or community teams or committees to facilitate collaborative management strategies.
Assist in helping others learn through formal or informal methods. Train, mentor, coach, and evaluate interpretive programs and products conducted by lower-level interpreters, critique these activities, and recommend individual or program improvements. Participate in the onboarding and the orientation of new employees, volunteers, interns, and other partners. Support an inclusive and collaborative environment.
Works a team member to accomplish tasks. Work conditions may include standing in one place, repetitive movements, answering repetitive questions, carrying a backpack with communication and first aid equipment, spending extended time outside in a wide range of weather conditions, walking/hiking over uneven terrain on trails or in a wilderness setting, and riding in a bus or train.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

By providing the opportunity for visitors to care about the places they visit, they promote stewardship and the opportunity for those visitors to care for park resources. National parks are among the most remarkable places in America for recreation, learning, and inspiration. The work done by park ranger-interpreters through effective interpretive and educational programs encourages the development of a personal stewardship ethic and broadens public support for preserving and protecting park resources, so that they may be enjoyed by present and future generations.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/15/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: park guide or tour leader, law enforcement or investigative work, archeological or historical preservation research work, forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation or conservation area, management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. You must list number hours worked per week in your resume.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate study in a related field or superior academic achievement. Related fields include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. (One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours). You must include a copy of your transcripts.

SAA: Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) by successful completion of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, social sciences, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources which provided me with the knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance to do the work of this position, and meet one of the following requirements for Superior Academic Achievement at the undergraduate level: 1) Class standing -- Graduated in the upper third of the class based on completed courses in the college, university, or major subdivision; 2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 scale as recorded on official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. (Note: A copy of your transcript is required as documented proof of your GPA, class standing, or election to honor society membership.) You must include a copy of your transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours worked per week in your resume and a copy of your transcripts.
To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: leading or supervising a team and experience as a park guide, park ranger, lead naturalist, interpretive lead/coach, staff trainer, coordinator/lead in environmental education, or lead museum docent or managing a volunteer program. Park guide or tour leader, law enforcement or investigative work, archeological or historical preservation research work, forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation or conservation area, management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations You must list number hours worked per week in your resume.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education, or a master's or equivalent graduate degree in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include a copy of your transcripts.

To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 18 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study.
