The Long Beach VA Healthcare System is currently recruiting one (1) Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) position located in the Pulmonary section in the Medicine Healthcare Group. The incumbent has comprehensive knowledge of the concepts, practices, procedures, and techniques regarding polysomnogram equipment and considerable skill in applying them to the conduct of the full range of sleep testing.

Duties

Duties include but not limited to: Polysomnography technologist must have the ability to work independently without direct supervision while recording physiologic data from patients sleeping overnight and occasionally during the day Must be able to prep patients, calibrate complex sleep recording equipment Responsible for monitoring the safety of patients in the lab, some of which are vulnerable to life threatening cardiac and/or pulmonary emergencies Recognize emergencies, provide competent care and call a code in the event of a medical emergency Review patient's medical history and physician's notes and orders in the patient's chart Responsible for accurately scoring each polysomnogram; sleep staging, respiratory events, cardiac events, periodic leg movements, arousals and awakenings according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine scoring standards Records and interprets the result of the exam and presents information to interpreting physician Work Schedule: Full-Time (Night Shift), 7:30pm - 6:00am; 4 nights a week, including weekends. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English. No person will be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C. chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA who is not proficient in written and spoken English. Certification: No certification or registration is required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. Grade Determinations: GS-08 Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirement, do you possess at least 1 year of experience equivalent to the GS-07 level? Examples of experience include knowledge of the more complex procedures as well as knowledge of the uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. In addition, you must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs): Advanced knowledge or the International Classification of Sleep Disorders and the ability to recognize uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. Ability to summarize and report polysomnographic data in narrative form. Knowledge of event characteristics (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, sleep stage, seizures, etc.) and ability to take appropriate action. Ability to provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians. Preferred Experience: 1 year experience from an American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) accredited hospital. Preferred Registered Polysomnographer References: VA Handbook 5005-15, Part II, Appendix G27 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08. Physical Requirements: Able to meet the physical demands for the position. Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken or written word. Must be able to view and read information on computer screens. Extensive interaction with patients, staff, physicians, family members, and visitors involved. Moving equipment and supplies, lifting, bending, stooping, and possible exposure to body fluid is involved. The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks and discomforts which require special safety and health precautions, e.g., working regularly with patients and in situations where there is risk of exposure to contagious diseases, odors and/or flammable materials. The Incumbent is required, from time to time, to wear protective clothing such as gloves and a mask to prevent disease and the spread of infection.
