Provides a high level of customer service to all staff at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center. The primary duty is to provide transportation to Veterans and their escorts to non-emergent appointments at the VA patient care facilities and/or non-emergent Community Care appointments. The normal tour of duty is Monday through Friday and the hours may be variable, including weekends and holidays.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
The primary function of the MVO is to operate wheelchair accessible vehicles to transport nonemergent wheelchair bound Veterans and their escorts.
The MVO may make trips to patient's homes, railway and bus stations. nursing homes, hospitals and doctors office in a timely and courteous manner.
Be assigned scheduled routes or individual appointments (pick-up and drop -off or point to point routes).
Must deal with patients, families nurses, doctors and other medical staff in a professional and courteous manner.
Be required to use the Vet ride tablet for assigned trips and duties; work assignments may also be verbally issued by VTS dispatch by telephone or personnel contact.
The MVO is responsible for understanding the use of Vetride GPS navigation tool and provide necessary data to track requirements needed by the VTS program.
Operate buses with seating capacity of 6 to 8 passengers and light shuttles with seating capacity from 2 to 8 passengers.
Be proficient in the operation of specialized lifts to safely load and unload wheelchair bound patients and employ the proper use of tie downs and other restraint equipment to secure wheelchairs and patients to ensure their safety during travel.
Transport persons on stretchers utilizing the appropriate vehicle and equipment.
Transports Veterans in all types of weather and road conditions and is subject to exposure to the elements during loading, unloading and fueling.
Must possess the knowledge and ability to do routine preventive maintenance checks and services of all vehicles and special purpose wheelchair lifts and tie-down equipment that he/she is qualified and authorized to operate.
Preventive checks and services include but not limited to the following: monitoring and replenishing fluid levels, checking tire pressure and hose connections and washing vehicles.
knowledge of defensive driving techniques, including the ability to recognize developing hazardous road and traffic conditions and the judgment to select alternate routes to avoid potential problems.
Completes trip tickets, gas tickets, motor vehicle logs, passenger manifest and turns in completed forms to the Mobility Manager/VTS Dispatcher daily.
Work Schedule: Full time Monday through Friday. Hours vary and may include weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather. Exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones because of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle. Have daily contact with tubercular, psychiatric, and other handicapped patients. Position requires walking, standing, bending, sitting, crawling and climbing and may perform the following functional requirements as frequently as daily: heavy lifting, heavy carrying, reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, both hands and both legs, have the ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
