The position is located at the Beckley VA Medical Center, Facilities Management Service, Maintenance and Operations Team (M&O), in Beckley WV. The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance and repair of: architectural, mechanical and electrical components of buildings requiring the use of a variety of trades and practices associated with the following occupations: plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, air conditioning, housekeeping, and grounds keeping.
Duties
The duties performed at any one time might include those above the simpler and more routine duties of the helper level jobs, less difficult than the journey work level, but up to and including, under close direction, journey worker level duties. Typical work assignments include performance of visual examinations and operational tests to determine the need for and the performance of repair work at the worker level of difficulty and responsibility of the trades.
Interpret instruction manuals and sketches.
Remove, clean, reinstall or replace joints and fixtures.
Assist with the removal and replacement of electrical fixtures and controls.
Tighten connections and wrap exposed wiring with insulating tape.
Use basic math to make measurements of material according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions.
Assist with removing scale, rust, dirt, and old paint.
Read and follow directions that explain how to apply and use prepared solvents.
Use tools such as scrapers, wire brushes, putty knives, hammers, measuring tape, handsaws, planes, screwdrivers, power saws, etc.
Assist in the changing of filters and cleaning fan foils.
Assist in performing gardening duties, such as tending lawns, flower, shrubs and trees.
Operate a variety of hand -and power-operated garden tools and equipment, such as edgers, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, mowers, and sprayers.
Operate, clean and adjust power cleaning equipment.
Follow safety guidelines when using power and hand held tools.
Apply standard plumbing methods and techniques to assist in measuring, cutting and bending pipe and tile, elbows, union joints, tile pipe, faucets, and shower drains.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the tasks performed are in hard-to-reach places. Incumbent is required to bend, stand, stoop, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and is sometimes required to lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 pounds. Incumbent may be exposed to cleaning chemicals and be fit tested for proper PPE and respirator.
