The Medical Technician will be assigned to the Diagnostic Service-Clinical Laboratory, VA Black Hills Health Care System, VA Midwest Healthcare Network (VISN 23), Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Fort Meade, SD. The Medical Technician is responsible for delivering care through delivered through the Fort Meade and Hot Springs (HS) VA Medical Centers, as well as through many community-based outpatient and rural outreach clinics.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Operates primarily as a "floating" Medical Technician and fills in wherever needed across all VABHHCS laboratories and/or departments such as (but not limited to) Phlebotomy, Transfusion Medicine, Chemistry & Toxicology, Hematology & Coagulation, Microbiology and Urinalysis. Performs the full range (moderate & high complexity) of laboratory on any/all laboratory shifts including (but not limited to) duty on weekends, holidays, nights, on-call rotation and/or other shifts. Performs a broad range of very difficult and highly complex tests and examinations which span all laboratory specialty areas such as (but not limited to) Phlebotomy, Transfusion Medicine, Chemistry & Toxicology, Hematology & Coagulation, Microbiology and Urinalysis. Evaluates quantitative biochemical, physiologic and morphologic testing results (resulting from very difficult and complex tests and examinations) with other laboratory results (i .e. HGB & HCT comparison or Anion Gap) to verify accuracy of results. Determines the need for and perform additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal/critical patient results. Approves, certifies, and reports to clinicians the results of very difficult and complex tests and examinations with only cursory review and infrequent spot checks of the individual tests by a pathologist or supervisory technologist. Prepares for and complies with all regulatory guidelines. Meets and maintains all technical requirements directed by policy, regulation and law. Prepares assigned section(s) for regulatory inspections such as (but not limited to) College of American Pathologists (CAP). Processes specimens using necessary laboratory techniques to prepare samples for specific analysis; controls physical conditions; responds to time factors to ensure that the physiologic state of the specimen is maintained. Collects blood from patients in the Blood Drawing Room, on the Wards, ICU, emergency Room, and Urgent Care using aseptic techniques, following standard precautions, and using personal protective equipment. Performs any laboratory and/or medical center task that is critical to the mission of the department and VHA as delegated by the Laboratory Manager and/or Supervisory Medical Technologist. Performs other related duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. And Specialized Experience GS-7: must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Medical Technician position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position. OR Substitution of Education for Experience: Successful completion of one (1) year of graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without documentation (Transcript Required) OR Combination of Education and Experience: must have equivalent combinations of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate level education as described above to meet the total experience requirements to qualify for this position at the GS-7 grade level. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing for extended periods of time, walking, bending over microscopes, reaching for supplies, and lifting moderately heavy items such as reagents. The work also requires specific physical characteristics and abilities such as dexterity and color vision.
