This position is located in the Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System / Oklahoma City, OK or Kansas City, MO. JPATS is responsible for scheduling and transporting pretrial and sentenced prisoners and criminal and non-criminal aliens throughout the United States and the territories and to and from foreign countries. The selectee of this position serves as the sole Paramedic on JPATS flights with responsibility for providing pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight medical support.
Duties
As a Paramedic at the GS-0640-7 grade level, some of your typical work assignments may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Visually assessing individuals to identify emerging or potential medical problems.
Physically assessing individuals to ensure they are stable and fit for transport.
Administering over the counter and prescription medications per physician's orders.
Responding to medical emergencies with appropriate procedures, techniques, methods, and equipment.
Preparing patient care documentation and reports.
Maintaining stock of medical supplies and equipment.
Physical Demands: The majority of your time will be spent on JPATS flights. You will be required to walk, stand, bend, and carry light items such as files and medical kits, as well as medical equipment. You must be able to lift at least seventy-five pounds unassisted and sufficiently fit to squat, twist, bend, and stoop while medically attending to a client in your charge, and in the confined and cramped environment of an aircraft. You must be able to function in the cabin of an aircraft without physical limitations or unreasonable accommodations. You will be required to treat prisoners/detainees in an aeromedical correctional environment and respond to medical emergencies. You must be able to perform the work under the physiological stresses of flight. You will be required to lift and move prisoners/detainees in emergency situations. You may be required to physically control patients until security arrives.
Work Environment: The work environment involves the discomforts and special safety precautions involved in airplane travel and physiological stresses of flight. You must be free from any condition such as claustrophobia, acrophobia, or other flight related anxiety that may impair your performance of paramedic duties on prolonged flights in potentially cramped and crowded environments. The work environment also includes the risk of exposure to infectious or contagious diseases which requires taking special safety precautions and threats of physical attack by prisoners/detainees in the aeromedical correctional setting.
Prior to assuming the duties of the position, you will be required to provide medical documentation for each of the following:
A recently completed (within the previous 12 calendar months) medical history questionnaire, as provided by the U.S. Marshals Service.
A current, valid tuberculosis (TB) test result and/or a recent chest x-ray interpretation, or other credible documentation indicating you are free from active tuberculosis.
An updated immunization document indicating that you are current with respect to immunizations required by the U.S. Marshals Service.
A current list of all medication you are currently using, to include the prescribed regimen and over-the-counter medications.

- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

- Must possess and maintain National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Nationally Registered Paramedic (NRP) certification, inclusive of prerequisite AHA BLS Healthcare Provider course completion or equivalent CPR and AED credentials.
- Must maintain current CPR certification and AED certification, and provide supporting documentation upon request.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the education and/or experience, as well as special qualification, required for the grade level to which you apply.
To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must meet one of the following:
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. You must have at least one year (12 months) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties:
Administering first aid treatment and/or life support care to sick or injured persons in transition to an acute care facility;
Collaborating with emergency medical providers to triage patients or casualties;
Recording patient medical history to document condition or injury, treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment; and
Operating medical equipment (e.g., electrocardiograms, external defibrillators, or bag valve mask resuscitators) in advanced life support environments.
OR
Graduate Education: You must have one year (18 semester hours) of graduate education in Paramedicine, Emergency Health Services, or Emergency Medicine. Such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position.
OR
Combination of Specialized Experience and Graduate Education: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. You must have an equivalent combination of the specialized experience and graduate level education described above that totals 100% when combined. Only graduate level education (education beyond undergraduate study) may be combined with specialized experience.
AND In addition to meeting the Specialized Experience and/or Graduate Education requirements described above, you must have the Special Qualification described below.
Selective Factor: A special qualification without which you could not perform the duties of the position in a satisfactory manner will be applied in addition to minimum qualifications as a screen out. If you do not meet the selective factor or fail to provide supporting documentation you will be ineligible for further consideration.
You must have National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Nationally Registered Paramedic (NRP) certification and submit a copy of your current certification.
Note: This position requires that you maintain current cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification and automatic external defibrillator (AED) certification. Prerequisites to NRP certification include American Health Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider course completion or equivalent credential. BLS meets the CPR and AED certification requirements for the purposes of making initial qualification determinations for this position. You must maintain current CPR certification and AED certification and provide supporting documentation upon request.
