Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2024 This position is located at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, within the Division of Interpretation, Education, and Partnerships.

Duties

Park Ranger (Interpretation) Major Duties: Develop and present a variety of programs including guided walks, illustrated talks (PowerPoint amphitheater and campfire programs), and demonstrations. Develop programs using principles of the NPS thematic interpretation model through topic research, familiarity with and creative use of delivery techniques. Provide informal interpretation and orientation for park guests in visitor centers, ranger stations, and while roving in the field. Actively promote the safety of park visitors and stewardship of park resources in all interactions, and potentially serve as the initial contact for accident reporting and emergency assistance. Present informal and formal talks. Lead guided tours. Respond to visitor inquiries for information, direction, and guidance. Provide on-the-job training and assistance to team members. Operate a motorboat to access remote areas. Area Information: This position is in Page, Arizona at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on the Arizona-Utah border. Page overlooks beautiful Lake Powell which offers a variety of water sports including boating, fishing, and river running on the Colorado River above and below Lake Powell. The surrounding land is beautiful red rock country perfect for hiking, hunting, and backcountry activities. Page is at the hub of the Grand Circle which contains America's largest concentration of national parks and monuments, such as, Grand Canyon, Zion, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and the Flagstaff Area Monuments. Page offers normal small community amenities such as an airport, shopping, medical and dental facilities, schools K-12, and college courses available through the local Community College. The elevation is 4300 feet with high-desert sunny days, cool nights, and low humidity.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/15/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Experience that demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: Park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one (1) full year of graduate level education in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, marine biology/sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. (One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours). The education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of at least a Bachelor's degree in a directly-related field (as described in above) AND I meet one of the criteria of Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.): (1) Class standing - Must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed course; OR (2) Grade-point average (G.P.A) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on four years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final two years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final two years of the curriculum; OR (3) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, 6 months of experience as described above (50% of experience) plus 9 semester hours (or 14 quarter hours) of directly related graduate education (50% of education), would equal 100% to meet this requirement. You must include transcripts and hours per week worked. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. ICTAP/CTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special prior­ity selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level on all competencies.
