This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Duties
Serves as a Cancer Registry Coordinator in a complex, VA Medical Center with medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, dermatology services and a research program affiliated with a major medical school.
Responsible for planning, organizing, actuating, and control of all activities in the Oncology Patient Registry Program.
Coordinates the activities of the Cancer/Tumor Registry with those of the Cancer Committee and cancer conferences.
Responsible for developing and implementing procedures for identifying all cases of malignant.
disease from departments within the facility where patients are diagnosed and treated.
Reviews information contained in documentation throughout the entire health record to assess appropriateness of inclusion in the registry.
Submits data monthly to the VHA National Oncology Program, submits data to the American College of Surgeon's National Cancer Database annually (as permissible).
Responsible for obtaining information annually on the current health and status of each patient in the registry until their death in compliance with the ACOS Commission on Cancer regulations.
Utilizes the necessary follow-up letters for patients seen outside this facility and may require considerable administrative skills to locate a patient and obtain current medical information by contacting clinics, private physicians, state registries, other medical centers, vital statistics, death indexes, and obituaries.
Organizes and maintains a data system which conforms to the standards of an Approved Cancer Program and meets the needs of the users of the registry data.

Monitors cancer committee processes and procedures implemented to improve patient care and to verify compliance of plans and requirements.
Initiates, conducts, and facilitates special projects, studies, and surveys which improve patient care and support the patient with cancer.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/31/2024.
Basic Requirements:
Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
Experience and Education (Must posses ONE of the following):
Experience: One (1) year of experience that indicates knowledge of medical terminology and general understanding of the health record. Six (6) months of the required one year of experience must have provided the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) needed to perform MRT work.
OR
Education: Two (2) years above high school with a minimum of 12 semester hours directly related to MRT work (e.g., courses in medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, and introduction to health records).
OR
Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying. The following educational/training substitutions are appropriate for combining education and experience: Six (6) months of experience that indicates knowledge of medical terminology and general understanding of the health record and one year above high school with a minimum of 6 semester hours of health information technology courses. OR Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision may be substituted on a month-for month basis for up to six months of experience provided the training program included courses in anatomy, physiology, and medical record techniques and procedures. Also requires six additional months of experience that indicates knowledge of medical terminology and general understanding of the health record.
English Language Proficiency: Medical Records Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.
Medical Records Technician (Cancer Registrar) Coordinator, GS-9
Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-8
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge and understanding of ACoS and/or facility requirements for administering, monitoring, and reporting compliance of the cancer program to the governing bodies. (b) Ability to interpret data to set, evaluate, and adjust the cancer program and/or facility goals and objectives. (c) Ability to inform cancer registry staff on the technical components of the cancer database, coordinate workflow and monitor data for accuracy and quality measures. (d) Ability to multitask. (f) Ability to communicate with diverse disciplines regarding the facility requirements of the cancer program. (g) Ability to analyze and interpret data for use in facility strategic planning. (h) Ability to develop cancer program/cancer registry policies and procedures to ensure patient-centered care for cancer patients in accordance with governmentwide, agency, and facility requirements.
Preferred Experience: Previous experience as a Cancer Tumor Registry.

This position is above Full Performance Level.
This position is open for three months. A cert with eligible applicants will be referred to the hiring manager every Friday.
