You will serve as a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC in the PUBLIC WORKS BUSINESS LINE of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST.

Duties

You will operate tools and equipment following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a clean and safe working environment. You will select materials to perform carpentry work to verify fit, dimensions, structural integrity, and other required objectives are met. You will read blueprints and specifications to complete work assignments. You will lift and carry loads following lifting techniques to prevent injury. You will establish deadlines, priorities, and work sequences for maintenance work projects. You will follow structural safety practices and guidelines in completing assignments.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States drivers license
  • This position may require ability to obtain licenses for the operation of Fork lift, High lift (JLG) and/or Construction equipment upon notification.
  • Should work be assigned that requires special certification you will be expected to acquire such certification or licensing and maintain any associated qualification requirements.
  • Must be able to adapt present knowledge and skills to new technology changes through progressive on-the-job and formal training required for this position.
  • May be assigned to perform tasks in non-trade related fields as an assistant/helper as workload requires.
  • May be assigned a truck stocked with controlled inventory and consumable materials. If assigned a stocked truck the incumbent is responsible for managing the material by following established procedures for inventory control and cost accounting.
  • Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position.
  • You will be required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize/eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: I HAVE THE ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION. 1) Must have Basic knowledge of a principal of operation of a variety of refrigerators, cold storage equipment, freezers, water coolers, dehumidifiers, air conditioning systems, ventilated systems and related equipment. 2) Skilled in the use of hand tools common to the general refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanical trades 3) Knowledgeable in the use of multi-meters, dial indicators, megger, regulated pressure gauges, leak detector, refrigerant tables and special purpose thermometers to locate and repair faulty equipment and reduce down time to a minimum. 4) Skilled in the use of oxygen-acetylene or similar welder, brazing and silver soldering materials to effect the needed tubing and circulating system repairs in a safe and efficient manner.5) Skilled in the safe and efficient use of common power tools, bench grinders, hand drills, disc grinder, drill press and similar shop tools.
