The Pharmacy Technician will assist the pharmacy supervisors in all areas of pharmacy. The IV technician will meet all requirements of full performance pharmacy technicians. The technician will assist the pharmacy supervisors to coordinate, develop, and assist overseeing the efforts of the assigned technicians in all pharmacy activities. This technician will include administrative activities such as narcotic vault management, workload analysis, and organization of day to day operations.

Duties

Duties a. Compounding sterile products: trains pharmacy staff on established procedures to assure compliance with USP chapter 795 / 797 / 800 standards. b. Completes preparation of intravenous admixtures including hazardous drugs and chemotherapy preparations. c. Work with the USP program manager to ensure all policies and procedures involving inpatient pharmacy are compliant with USP 795 / 797 / 800 standards. d. Perform the technical duties of inpatient pharmacy in all areas of cart fill, unit dose repackaging equipment, point of care cabinets inventory management, narcotic dispensing, and sterile compounding procedures. e. Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot problems with our automated equipment. f. Understanding the importance of maximizing production and efficiency. g. Management of ward stock medications. Ensuring that ward stock and unit dose medications are prepared, delivered, and stored in compliance with department and facility policies, procedures, and regulations. h. Replenishes and maintains emergency crash carts. i. Reviews inventory and ward stock medications for expired medications. Completes these reviews on time in accordance with department policy. j. As an experienced pharmacy technician, works alongside other technicians coaching, mentoring, assisting and/or training them in the proper performance of their duties. k. May cover outpatient areas as needed and will work closely with other pharmacy Technicians. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. Grade Determinations: GS-6 Pharmacy Tech Experience. One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. 2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. 3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. 4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. 5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. 6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. **You must address the KSA's in your resume for qualification** Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above. Assignments. Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. References: VA Handbook 5005/15, Part II, Appendix G28, Pharmacy Technician Qualification Standards. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. Physical Requirements: Functional Requirements: heavy lifting {45Ibs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (8 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); repeated bending (4 hours per day); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted).
