The Supervisory Recreation Therapist is responsible for the supervision, administrative management, and direction of program services. They evaluate programs to ensure proper coordination with the overall delivery of health care.
This position is located at Audie L. Murphy VAMC in San Antonio, Texas within Recreation Therapy Service.
Duties
Duties may include but are not limited to:
-Use independent judgment of clinical information to administer specialized, complex, and extensive recreation therapy treatment theories, techniques, and evaluation methodologies in the provision of care to a diverse patient population with varying diagnoses, functional impairments, and cultural backgrounds.
-Assembles pre-evaluation data, interprets medical record information, reviews therapy prescriptions, and conducts mental and physical evaluation of patient in order to develop and implement a treatment plan.
-Functions as a core team member of a clinical interdisciplinary team for the purpose of providing total health care delivery to the patient and continuity of care by sharing ideas and exchanging pertinent information.
-Oversees the planning, organizing and scheduling of programs, events and activities.
-Shares the responsibility for the Service Quality Management program.
-Develops both long and short-range goals and plans for Recreation Therapy Service.
-Develops and implements policies and procedures.
-Promotes effective communication with all patients, caregivers, treatment team members, Medical Center staff and community partners.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education. The following education requirements apply to the recreation therapist: (1) Recreation Therapist
(a) A bachelor's degree or higher, from an accredited college or university, with a major in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure, with an option and/or emphasis in therapeutic recreation. The degree must be approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC);
OR,
(b) A bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university and must be a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS). The degree must be approved by the NCTRC. If hired under this education, the certification cannot be waived.
Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials. The private organization must deem such education at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs.
Certification. Recreation Therapist. Applicants must be certified in recreation therapy as a CTRS by the NCTRC.
Grandfathering Provision. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English, as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Grade Determinations:
Supervisory Recreation Therapist, GS-12
Experience. At least one year of creditable experience at the next lower grade level. Examples of GS-11 experience include but are not limited to: Ability to adapt assessment tools and treatment interventions to address the complexity of the diagnosis or disabilities and demonstrate the clinical reasoning necessary to identify the need for further in-depth specific assessment of function and utilization of unconventional methods and techniques; Knowledge to independently interpret provider referrals and consults, and apply all health and safety regulations to minimize and mitigate risks in the provision of patient care and the environment of care; Skill in effectively communicating and educating, in a clear and concise manner, with patients, families, caregivers, and other health care professionals to facilitate the interdisciplinary treatment process; Skill in independently utilizing appropriate screening and evaluation techniques required to appropriately provide direct patient care in areas such as, but not limited to recommendations for recreation therapy assistive devices, including fit and function; Skill in independently applying evidence-based and best practice therapeutic techniques and interventions; Knowledge of the principles and techniques in recreation therapy assessment and the treatment of recreation, leisure, and biopsychosocial functional deficits.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
i. Ability to provide treatment in complex cases and work with great independence.
ii. Ability to balance multiple responsibilities, set priorities, delegate tasks, meet multiple deadlines, analyze organizational problems, and develop and implement effective solutions.
iii. Ability to analyze organizational and operational problems to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient operations and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity within the service.
iv. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and
managers.
v. Ability to use evidence-based practices, clinical practice guidelines in a professional area, and to guide the staff in applying these tools.
vi. Knowledge of organizational theories and strategies to positively impact the overall goals and objectives within the service.
vii. Knowledge related to administrative functions such as fiscal, material supply, equipment management, and clinical and program management.
Preferred Experience:
-1+ Years leadership or supervisory experience within Recreation Therapy.
-3+ Years of experience working with various populations, including geriatric, physical rehab and mental health, functioning in a recreation therapist, role.
-Ability to organize work and function independently - Articulate examples of experiences of staying organized and working independently.
-Ability to communicate orally and in writing-Identify examples of oral and written communication experience.
-Ability to analyze organizational and operation problems to develop solutions-Identify examples of problems identified and proposed solutions.
