You will serve as a Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Animal) in the Veterinary Support Department of NAVMEDRSCH UNIT SAN ANTONIO.

Duties

You will submit specialized veterinary reports to the regulatory compliance agencies and to the Surgeon General of the Navy. You will develop plans for animal handing and surgical techniques of animal experiments, the scheduling and maintenance of necessary supplies and equipment. You will develop standard operating procedures for the care, handling, and enrichment of laboratory animals in a research setting. You will collect data and documentation during the research experience.

  • This position is eligible for part time, full time or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Managing multiple species of laboratory animals to include non-human primates, swine, and rodents, within a translational research lab. Handling and restraint of laboratory animals such as rodents, swine, and non-human primates during procedures and minor surgeries. Maintaining technical and operational responsibilities for multiple laboratory phases. Utilizing knowledge, training, and experience of multiple types of surgeries such as: Micro-vascular, Orthopedic, Vascular, Neurological, Laparoscopic, Emergency and routine veterinary services used to perform specialized operative/ gross pathology techniques, maintain animal care, and conduct laboratory research on animals. Assisting with the preparation and distribution of work assignments for the research staff. Preparing, performing, monitoring and recovering laboratory animals from anesthetic protocols. Performing long-term anesthesia protocols (greater than 6 hours) on laboratory animals (especially nonhuman primates and swine) including thorough knowledge of both spontaneous and mechanical ventilation techniques, intubation, IV catheter placement, perioperative care, aseptic technique, analgesia and anesthetic administration, Total Intravenous Anesthesia, fluid therapy, thermal regulation, biological sample collection, general surgical techniques, and central venous catheter placement.
