You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN in the RADIOLOGICAL WORK FACILITY IN THE OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will plan and coordinate with various trades, assist crafts, and ships force the movement of radioactive material (RAM) to and from naval vessels, storage areas, nuclear took rooms, and off base work sites. You will participate in the physical inventory of all RAM stored outside radiologically controlled areas. You will perform physical surveillances of RAM not in permanent storage. You will coordinate and schedule work requests from shipyard shops/codes to achieve efficient work. You will complete on- the-job training for Radioactive material Controller, including the ability to operate electronic equipment and computers. You will use methods, techniques, and requirements to operate the material shredder.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience utilizing methods and techniques for minimizing exposure of personnel and equipment to ionizing radiation and/or radioactive contamination. Experience identifying the general structure of the various vessels powered by nuclear propulsion plants with respect to compartments containing radioactively contaminated systems and/or materials. Experience classifying adequate containment for components and material which are radioactive and/or radioactively contaminated to prevent loss or spread of radioactive contamination. Experience interpreting specified traffic routes for transporting radioactive/radioactively contaminated components or material within Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Experience locating radiologically controlled areas within the shipyard as specified by the RADCON Office. Experience utilizing various processes in several trades sufficient to support specified procedures for planning and transferring radioactive/radioactively contaminated components or materials within the shipyard and communicating specified procedures for controlling accident/spill situations. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as general or specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents.
